結論｜似ている＝similar to、異なる＝different from、同一＝the same as
英検準2級の短文空所補充で、similar to・different from・the same asを使い分けるには、比較している二つがよく似ているが完全一致ではないのか、違っているのか、同じであるのかを判断します。These two plans are similar to each other.（二つの計画は似ている）、The new schedule is different from the old one.（新しい予定は以前と異なる）、My answer is the same as yours.（私の答えはあなたの答えと同じ）です。

3つの基本表現を比較
- similar to＋名詞・代名詞：similar to my school / similar to mine / similar to each other（似ている）
- different from＋名詞・代名詞：different from yesterday’s plan / different from ours（異なっている）
- the same as＋名詞・節：the same as yours / the same room as my friend / the same time as yesterday（同じ）
- similarly：副詞「同様に」。similarは形容詞なので品詞も異なる。
- sameとsimilar：同じ意味ではない。the sameは同一性、similarは共通する特徴を持つこと。
似ているだけならthe sameと断定しない
Our reports are similar, but the examples are different.（二つのレポートは似ているが例は違う）という文では、同一ではないことが明示されています。これをOur reports are exactly the same.と書くと意味が変わります。反対に、色・形・文章の全てが同一だと述べたい場合、exactly the same asが適切です。
different fromとdifferent to／thanの注意点
英語にはdifferent to（特に英国英語）やdifferent than（特に米国英語）も使われる文脈があります。したがって、すべてを一律に文法的誤りとは断定できません。学校英語で比較の標準形を整理する場合、まずdifferent fromを確実に使えるようにします。本教材の4択では語法が重なる選択肢を避けています。
mine・ours・theirsを使うと名詞の繰り返しを省ける
My schedule is different from hers.のhersはher scheduleを指します。Our opinion is similar to theirs.のtheirsはtheir opinionに当たります。目的語が人や物を指すだけでなく、同じ種類の意見・時間・料金・計画を比較しているのかを確認してください。
独自4択24問｜前置詞を正しく選ぶ
各英文の比較表現の空欄に入る前置詞をA〜Dから一つ選びます。前後の英文を読み、「類似・違い・同一」の意味と語順を両方確認してください。

次の英文を自然な英文に修正してください。後半には「意味が似ているだけか、完全一致か」も含みます。英語の変種によって別形が使われる場合は、問題文の条件に従ってください。

訂正2：This timetable is similar from last year’s timetable.
訂正3：The two designs are similar as each other.

訂正15：The two posters are different from one another; their words and pictures are exactly identical. (State identity.)

Q．similar toとthe same asは同じですか？
違います。similar toは共通点があり似ていること、the same asは同じであることを表します。
Q．different withは使えますか？
学校で比較を表現するときはdifferent fromを基本として覚えます。different withは標準的な比較の形ではありません。
Q．different thanやdifferent toは間違いですか？
英語の地域差・文脈によって用いられます。必ず誤りとはいえませんが、準2級の基礎としてdifferent fromを優先します。
Q．the same toは使えますか？
この比較の意味ではthe same asを使います。
