while the other group比較した条件何を変えたか特定する
received the same amount同一条件水・時間・材料を揃えたか
did not prove / might also結果の限界・他の要因確定事実と仮説を混同しない

A science club wanted to find out how sunlight affects the growth of bean plants. The students placed ten young plants of the same type in two groups. Five plants were kept near a sunny window, and the other five were placed in a shaded corner. Both groups received the same amount of water and were grown in the same type of soil. After fourteen days, the average height of the sunny plants was 18 centimeters, while the shaded plants averaged 12 centimeters. The students reported that the sunny group grew taller in this test. However, they did not conclude that more sunlight would always help every type of plant. Their teacher suggested repeating the test and recording the temperature in each location, because the sunny window might also be warmer.

Students in a design class built two paper bridges to compare folding methods. Both bridges used one sheet of the same paper and crossed a gap of 20 centimeters. Bridge A was made from a flat sheet, while Bridge B had three folds along its length. The students placed identical coins on each bridge, one at a time, until it could no longer hold them safely. Bridge A supported eight coins, and Bridge B supported twelve. The group concluded that the folded design held more coins in their test. They did not measure how long the bridges would last outdoors or whether the same result would occur with thicker paper. Their teacher asked them to build several more bridges before making a general claim.

A school newspaper reported on a small study about background music. Ten volunteers read a short English passage while quiet music played. Another ten volunteers read the same passage in silence. Everyone had fifteen minutes to read and answer the same questions. The music group averaged seven correct answers out of ten, while the silent group averaged eight. Some students claimed that silence was better for learning. However, the groups contained different students, and the researchers had not measured their reading ability before the study. The report therefore said only that the silent group scored slightly higher in this particular test. It did not prove that music causes lower scores for every learner.

A class compared two groups of seedlings to study the possible effect of compost. The students planted six seeds of the same type in each of two trays. One tray contained ordinary soil, while the other contained the same soil mixed with a small amount of compost. Both trays were placed by the same window and received equal amounts of water. After three weeks, the average seedling in the compost tray was 15 centimeters tall, compared with 11 centimeters in the ordinary-soil tray. The students said the compost group had grown taller in this test. The teacher asked them to check whether all seeds had grown and to repeat the trial at another time of year. A single comparison did not show what would happen with all plant types or in every season.

FAQ
