結論｜althoughの後ろは文、despiteの後ろは名詞・動名詞
although + 主語 + 動詞、despite + 名詞 / 動名詞 が基本です。Although it was raining, we went out. と Despite the rain, we went out. はともに「雨にもかかわらず外出した」です。ただし Despite it was raining は標準的な英文として誤りです。

1．although / though / even though / despite / in spite ofの使い分け
although / though / even though は接続詞で後ろに文が続きます。even thoughは逆接を強調します。despite / in spite of は前置詞（句）で後ろに名詞・代名詞・動名詞が続きます。in spite of にはofが必要ですが、despite of は通常誤りです。

5．準2級読解での実践：逆接の次が筆者の主張になるとは限らない
Although the library is small, it has a large collection of science books. は『図書館は小さいが、科学の本の蔵書が多い』です。逆接表現は予想と違う事実を導きます。ただし主張・答えの位置を機械的に決めることはできません。設問に対して本文の根拠と一致する選択肢を選びます。

模範解答・構造の根拠
- Although he was tired, he stayed until the end. / Despite being tired, he stayed until the end. despiteの直後にhe wasという節をそのまま置けません。
- Despite the noise, she studied. または Although it was noisy, she studied. althoughは接続詞なので基本的に節を続けます。
- In spite of the rain, they played. in spite ofは3語でひとまとまりです。
- Despite the long wait, we enjoyed the show. despiteにofを付けません。
- Despite the rain, we walked to school. it was rainingをthe rainに置き換えます。
- Although Ken studied hard, he did not pass the test. 誰が勉強したかを明示し、過去形studiedを使います。
- Despite its small size, the shop had many books. itsはshopを受ける所有格です。
- Despite the fact that the library was noisy, the students finished their work. the fact thatの後には主語と動詞のある節を置けます。
補足：「despiteの後ろは名詞・動名詞」という基本ルールに加えて、despite the fact that + 主語 + 動詞という形も正しい英語です。ただし despite that he was … と直結する形は通常避けます。Cambridge Dictionaryの解説とBritish Councilの文法資料も参照できます。
よくある質問
Q．despiteとin spite ofは同じ意味ですか？
基本的にはどちらも「〜にもかかわらず」を表します。語の並びが異なり、despiteにはofを付けません。
Q．althoughとbutを同じ文で使えますか？
学習段階では Although it was late, we continued. または It was late, but we continued. と書き、Although …, but … のような重複を避けましょう。
Q．最初に覚えるべきことは何ですか？
意味の暗記だけでなく、接続詞の後ろは節、前置詞の後ろは名詞句という構造の違いを優先してください。
