結論｜acrossは横断、throughは内部通過、alongは〜沿い、pastは通り過ぎる
英検準2級の道案内・旅行・リスニングの英語で、across / through / along / past / overを区別する鍵は「どこをどう通ったか」です。across the roadは道路を片側から反対側へ横断、through a tunnelはトンネルの中を通過、along the riverは川沿い、past the museumは博物館に立ち寄らず通り過ぎる、over a fenceは柵の上を越えるという意味です。
英検協会が準2級の公式試験内容に記載する主な題材には道案内・旅行が含まれています。ただし、この前置詞が毎回出題されるという保証はありません。慶英会は初見英文で移動を説明できるよう、独自4択24問＋誤文訂正16問＝40問を制作しました。英検過去問やNEW TREASUREの教科書本文は転載していません。
7つの移動前置詞を一目で比較
- across＋開けた場所・道路：walk across the street / swim across the river＝一方から反対側へ。
- through＋内部・通路：go through the tunnel / walk through the forest＝内部を通り抜ける。
- along＋線状の経路：walk along the road / along the river＝道や川に沿って進む。
- past＋目印：walk past the bank＝銀行のそばを通り過ぎる。
- over＋上方：jump over the fence / fly over the building＝柵や建物の上を越える。
- into / out of：go into a room / step out of a bus＝内部へ入る・内部から出る。
- around / towards：walk around a lake / walk towards the entrance＝周囲を回る・入口の方向へ進む。
acrossとthroughが入れ替わる？
acrossは一方から反対側への横断に注目し、throughは内部を通ることに注目します。Cambridge Dictionary「Across, over or through?」にも同様の区別が示されています。ただしacross a park / through a parkのように、同じ場所で横断の仕方・通路の印象によって両方の表現が使える場合があります。今回の設問では、道路の横断・トンネル内部など、片方が最も自然になる状況を明示しています。
alongとpastは動きが違う
Go along the street.はその通りに沿って進む指示です。Go past the library.は図書館を目的地にせず、図書館を通り過ぎてさらに先へ進む意味です。Walk towards the library.は図書館の方向へ進むという意味で、必ず到着するとは限りません。
