英検準1級のwhereas・while・unlike・rather than・instead ofは、いずれも「一方で・〜と違って・〜ではなく」と訳されます。しかしwhereasとwhileは基本的に節を結ぶ接続詞、unlikeは名詞句を導く前置詞、rather thanは二つの選択肢や動詞を対比し、instead ofは名詞・動名詞を導いて代替を示します。慶英会独自の4択20問・英作文8問・長文12問で、意味と文法構造を同時に確認します。
本記事は英検協会の公式過去問ではありません。文章・設問は慶英会が独自に作成しています。準1級Readingの長文語句空所や、Writingで複数の立場を比べる際に応用できます。
一目で区別する五つの構造
A is expensive, whereas B is affordable.＝二つの節の対比。While A was promising, it was not yet proven.＝有望でも未実証という譲歩。Unlike the original plan, the trial uses existing rooms.＝名詞句同士の比較。We chose to test rather than expand.＝二つの動詞を対比。Instead of expanding, we tested the plan.＝動名詞で代替を表す。whileは『〜している間』という時間的用法もあるので、対比との読み分けが必要です。
演習の解き方
英文の空所の直後を見て、主語＋動詞を持つ節なのか名詞句なのかを分類します。次に『二つを比較する』か『一つの案を採用せず別案を取る』かを判断します。語順と論理の両方が自然になるよう確認してください。

長文1｜図書館の夜間開放の二つの案
A district library compared two approaches to increasing study space. The first proposal required constructing a new building, whereas the second would use existing rooms on selected evenings. Unlike the first plan, the second could be tested without immediately purchasing land. While some residents welcomed later hours, others were concerned about the cost of additional supervision. Instead of adopting either approach permanently, the library approved a six-week trial. Managers decided to measure attendance and staffing costs rather than assume that higher visitor numbers would automatically mean the project was worthwhile. The library will review the findings before making another decision.

While many people who tried the audio said they liked it, visitors who had not used the feature were not surveyed. The center therefore kept printed guides instead of replacing them. Rather than claim that the audio guide was better for everyone, staff planned to compare how people used both formats.

While the shared van traveled fewer kilometers, some customers received their orders later than expected. Instead of immediately expanding the system, the managers decided to review late deliveries and staff time. They wanted to compare total operating costs rather than rely only on the decrease in travel distance.

読み間違いが起こりやすい二つの箇所
While many users welcomed the service, some people could not use it. ではwhileが二つの立場を対比しています。しかしWhile staff were checking the equipment, the building remained closed. では『職員が機器を点検している間』という時間を表します。さらにRather than expand … は選択、whereas … は単なる対比です。文章の結論・実施段階と結びつけて判断しましょう。

FAQ｜whereasとwhileは同じ意味ですか？
対比を示す場合は近い意味になりますが、whileは時間的な同時性や譲歩も表します。今回の問題では両方が正答になり得る選択肢の並べ方を避けています。
FAQ｜rather thanとinstead ofは交換できますか？
動名詞を使うなどで近い意味になる場合があります。ただし文法上のつながりが異なるため、rather than＋動詞原形、instead of＋動名詞など具体的な形も覚えましょう。
