Student Research Grants and Fair Selection
A network of schools established a small fund to support students who wanted to investigate questions beyond the usual science syllabus. Teams could apply for money to purchase materials, rent equipment, or consult specialists. Teachers hoped the program would encourage original questions rather than reward only projects that used expensive technology. The first application round included studies of local rivers, pedestrian safety, and regional history. Because the total amount requested exceeded the budget, the committee needed criteria for choosing which teams to support.
Some committee members suggested favoring projects most likely to produce impressive results. Other teachers argued that this approach could disadvantage students who were unfamiliar with formal applications or lacked access to advanced equipment. The committee therefore developed a set of criteria addressing the clarity of each research question, the necessity of requested resources, and the method for evaluating results. It also organized optional workshops explaining budgets and research methods. Advisers were instructed to answer questions rather than write students’ proposals for them.
At the end of the year, the schools reviewed not only completed projects but also feedback from unsuccessful applicants. Some teams said the criteria had made the process easier to understand; others said the application form was too demanding. The committee did not claim that a high number of applications proved the program was fair. Instead, it planned to investigate who had applied, which students had received support, and whether funded projects had helped participants develop practical research skills.
1. Why did the committee have to select among proposals? (A) The total funding requested was greater than the available budget. (B) All teams proposed exactly the same research question. (C) Teachers had prohibited any outdoor research. (D) Every student had already completed a project.
問2. Why did teachers question choosing only impressive-looking proposals? (A) The school had unlimited research equipment. (B) Such a rule might favor applicants with previous resources and experience. (C) All teachers wanted to eliminate assessment criteria. (D) The proposals had already received full funding.
問3. Which factor became part of the selection criteria? (A) The number of a team’s social-media followers. (B) Whether students lived nearest the school. (C) How the team planned to evaluate its findings. (D) Whether the team was willing to purchase all equipment privately.
問4. What was the role of advisers at optional workshops? (A) To guarantee funding to every team. (B) To complete every application on behalf of students. (C) To remove the need for budgeting. (D) To guide students without taking over their work.
問5. What feedback did unsuccessful applicants provide? (A) Some felt the application form was demanding. (B) They all praised the form without criticism. (C) They received the same money as funded teams. (D) No applicant was asked for an opinion.
問6. Why was the number of applications an incomplete measure of fairness? (A) It directly proved the quality of every project. (B) It did not reveal who could participate or benefit from support. (C) It showed that the budget was unlimited. (D) It confirmed that all participants had equal experience.
問7. What would the committee investigate next? (A) Only the number of buildings used. (B) Only the amount of equipment bought. (C) Participation, access to funding, and research skills gained. (D) Whether all future projects could avoid data collection.
Sharing Science Equipment Across Schools
A district created a common collection of scientific instruments for schools that could not afford to purchase every specialist device. Each school could reserve microscopes, environmental sensors, or recording equipment for selected weeks. The organizers expected the arrangement to reduce duplicated purchases and help students carry out experiments they would otherwise have to study only through textbooks. During the first term, the equipment was borrowed frequently, especially before school presentations.
However, several schools needed the same devices at similar times, creating scheduling conflicts. Transporting delicate instruments sometimes required special packaging, and certain tools needed calibration after being moved. Teachers also reported that instruction sheets assumed more technical experience than some students possessed. The district added a shared calendar, transport guidelines, and short training sessions. These measures made the service easier to use but increased the time required for administration.
Officials also questioned whether the number of loans was an adequate measure of educational value. A device could be booked and returned without students completing the intended experiment. Meanwhile, schools far from the collection center faced more transport difficulties than those nearby. Before expanding the collection, the district decided to compare completed experiments, maintenance expenses, and accessibility. It concluded that possession of sophisticated equipment was useful only if students could use it safely and meaningfully.

問9. Why did scheduling conflicts occur? (A) All schools operated at different times. (B) No equipment was ever requested. (C) Several schools wanted the same devices during similar periods. (D) All instruments could be copied instantly.
問10. What was necessary after transporting some instruments? (A) Calibration to ensure reliable measurements. (B) Immediate permanent disposal. (C) A guarantee that the instruments had become cheaper. (D) Replacing all tools with printed textbooks.
問11. What problem was identified with the instruction sheets? (A) They contained no scientific words at all. (B) They were written only for parents. (C) They were always too short to read. (D) They assumed more technical knowledge than some users had.
問12. What cost could rise when the program became easier to use? (A) Administrative time required for coordination. (B) The cost of every student’s private laboratory. (C) The number of available science subjects. (D) The number of schools in the district.
問13. Why were loan totals insufficient to evaluate educational results? (A) A loan always guaranteed an experiment had been completed. (B) Students might borrow tools without completing a practical task. (C) The tools had never been used in any school. (D) All schools were located next to the center.
問14. Which outcomes would be evaluated before expansion? (A) The color of each school’s building. (B) Only how many instruments were purchased. (C) Completed experiments, costs, and access across schools. (D) Only how many teachers attended meetings.

Mentors, Student Independence, and Evidence
A local college invited university students to mentor younger pupils who were preparing short research reports. The mentors were expected to help pupils clarify questions and find reliable sources, rather than provide finished answers. Some groups gained confidence and completed reports on local transportation or environmental issues. Teachers welcomed this progress but wanted to know whether students were learning to evaluate evidence independently.
One difficulty was that the quality of mentoring varied. Some mentors asked useful questions and explained how to compare sources, whereas others corrected pupils’ drafts so extensively that the final reports no longer reflected the pupils’ own decisions. The college therefore introduced training on constructive feedback. Mentors were instructed to identify gaps in reasoning and request evidence, but not to rewrite whole sections. Teachers also began keeping earlier versions of students’ work so that progress could be observed over time.
The college evaluated the pilot using several indicators. It reviewed pupils’ ability to explain why a source was trustworthy, the quality of their revisions, and feedback from groups that had not completed reports. A polished final product was not treated as sufficient evidence of learning. The organizers concluded that mentoring should strengthen independent judgment, even if this meant that students needed more time to produce a complete report.
