• had better＋原形：特定の状況で、不利益を避けるための強い助言。had better not doが否定形。過去形hadだが主に現在・未来への助言。
• would rather＋原形：本人が何を好むか。would rather A than Bで比較。
• would rather＋人＋過去形：他人に今・今後こうしてほしいという願望。過去形でも過去の出来事とは限らない。
• might/may as well＋原形：他に良い方法がないとき、そうするのが合理的という提案。may also（追加で〜も）とは違う。

英検準1級の長文・面接・英作文への応用

had betterは「このままでは困るかもしれないので、そうするのが賢明」という助言です。would ratherは話者の希望、might as wellは他に良い案がないときの合理的な選択です。may wellは有力な可能性を述べるだけです。要約でmay well be correctをproved correctへ、might as well use the hallをmust use the hallへ書き換えると意味が強くなりすぎます。

形はhadですが、通常は現在・未来の具体的な状況への強い助言です。had better＋原形を使います。

may wellとmay as wellは何が違いますか？

may wellは「十分あり得る」という推測、may as wellは「ほかに良い案がなければそうしよう」という実用的な提案です。

would ratherの後には必ず原形が来ますか？

同じ主語ならwould rather＋原形が基本です。別の人に行動してほしい場合はwould rather＋人＋過去形（現在・未来の希望）などが使われます。
