not as … as、the 比較級 … the 比較級、more A than B、rather thanなどは長文の結論を左右します。
慶英会の準1級無料演習:最上級と順位one of the most・second largest40問。
not as … asは比較対象ほどではない。
more A than Bは観点の対比にも用いられる。
may/couldなどの不確実性を残す。
- not so much A as B:AというよりB。

A town compared two plans for modernizing its public library. The first plan would make the existing building larger, while the second would improve online access to the library’s resources. Supporters of expansion argued that more indoor space could provide a better study environment. However, a survey suggested that some residents wanted longer digital-service hours rather than additional shelves. The council concluded that the more information it collected from different users, the more accurately it could identify the community’s needs.
D1. What did some residents prefer?
- A. An increase in printed shelves.
- B. Longer digital-service hours.
- C. The closure of every study area.
- D. A higher entrance fee.
D2. What does the final sentence imply?
- A. The council had decided to abandon both plans.
- B. More surveys always guarantee consensus.
- C. Collecting broader feedback could improve the decision.
- D. Every user already had the same preference.
A delivery cooperative tested electric bicycles and small vans in a busy district. Bicycles were easier to park, but vans could carry heavier packages. When traffic was especially heavy, bicycle deliveries were often faster than van deliveries. The cooperative did not claim that one vehicle was better under every condition. It considered the weight of goods, travel distance, road safety, and staff training before selecting a suitable option for each route.
D3. Which advantage of bicycles is mentioned?
- A. They can carry every heavy item.
- B. They never require maintenance.
- C. They are easier to park.
- D. They eliminate all road risks.
D4. What conclusion did the cooperative reach?
- A. Vehicle choice should depend on the conditions of the delivery.
- B. Electric bicycles were always superior.
- C. Small vans should be banned.
- D. Weight and road safety were irrelevant.
A museum introduced lower admission fees for students but did not reduce the standard adult price. The director explained that access for younger visitors was more important than maximizing short-term ticket income. Initial attendance rose, especially among local school groups. Nevertheless, staff said the number of visitors alone was not as useful as information about whether people understood the exhibitions. They planned to collect feedback about learning experiences as well as ticket sales.
D5. What was the museum’s main pricing change?
- A. It made all tickets free.
- B. It doubled adult prices.
- C. It eliminated group visits.
- D. It reduced fees for students.
D6. What did staff want to evaluate beyond visitor counts?
- A. The height of the building.
- B. Visitors’ understanding of exhibitions.
- C. The number of nearby restaurants.
- D. The age of every employee.
Two neighborhoods requested improvements to their parks. One asked for more sports facilities, whereas the other needed safer paths and resting areas. Officials observed that the larger neighborhood did not necessarily have a greater need for investment. Some residents argued that the condition of existing facilities mattered more than population size alone. The city therefore chose to inspect both parks before announcing how much money each would receive.
D7. How did the two neighborhoods differ?
- A. They requested different kinds of improvements.
- B. Both wanted only sports equipment.
- C. Neither had a public park.
- D. They had identical safety concerns.
D8. What did the officials decide to do?
- A. Fund the larger neighborhood automatically.
- B. Reject both proposals.
- C. Assess the parks before distributing money.
- D. Stop collecting residents’ comments.

理由:not as … asの比較。
理由:more than justは『単に〜だけではない』。
理由:beneficial to A。
理由:not so much A as B=AというよりB。

The older method is much cheaper.

the more …, the more …
