A school introduced a new system for distributing homework. After one month, the principal claimed that students’ academic performance had improved, but the school had not compared examination results with those of a similar group. A newspaper alleged that the school had concealed unfavorable data. The school denied hiding information and stated that the available records concerned only system usage. A researcher argued that neither statement established a clear conclusion about learning outcomes. She maintained that independent assessments were necessary even if the system was popular. The principal later admitted that his original announcement had been too confident. In a revised notice, he explained which results had actually been measured and which effects remained uncertain. The incident showed that different speakers could claim, allege, deny, or admit facts while readers still needed to assess the evidence separately.
Q33. What had the school directly recorded?
- Every student’s long-term progress
- The system’s usage rather than comparable examination gains
- The newspaper’s finances
- All effects on family life
Q34. What did the newspaper allege?
- That the school had hidden unfavorable data
- That the library was permanently closed
- That every student had passed an examination
- That the researcher approved the system
Q35. What position did the researcher maintain?
- Popularity was proof of learning
- The newspaper’s allegation was automatically correct
- All records should be deleted
- Independent assessments were still needed
Q36. What did the principal later admit?
- That all students had achieved perfect grades
- That the report was never written
- That his earlier statement was overly confident
- That no homework system existed
A consumer group questioned an online shop’s claim that a reusable container would last for ten years. The shop asserted that the product had undergone thorough testing, but it had not provided the methods or results publicly. A customer alleged that the advertisement had concealed important limitations. The company denied deliberately misleading customers and maintained that its internal inspection was reliable. An independent laboratory later examined samples and stated that some performed well under the test conditions. However, the laboratory argued that a short trial could not establish the lifetime of every container under ordinary use. The company eventually admitted that the original advertisement lacked adequate detail and revised it. The consumer group welcomed clearer information but emphasized that the new description should be evaluated over time. Readers had to separate each speaker’s statement from the evidence that actually supported it.
Q37. What was the online shop’s original claim?
- Every customer would receive a refund
- The container had no environmental impact
- It would last for ten years
- All containers were made from glass
Q38. What did the independent laboratory actually find?
- Some samples performed well under the tested conditions
- Every container was guaranteed to last a decade
- The product had never been tested
- All advertising was illegal
Q39. Why did the laboratory challenge the stronger claim?
- The containers were sold abroad
- The shop had no customers
- The report was entirely about prices
- A short trial could not prove each product’s ordinary lifetime
Q40. What did the company ultimately admit?
- Every test sample failed
- Its original advertising lacked sufficient detail
- The laboratory had been permanently closed
- The product could not be recycled

Researchers argued that the evidence was insufficient. The evidence proved that the program failed.
