「Imagine the library stayed open until six.」 「We measured 24 liters on Monday.」
Imagine that …「〜と想像してください」、Suppose (that) …「仮に〜としましょう」、What if …?「もし〜だったら?」、If …
③may・might・could・wouldと、did・was・measuredなどの違いを確認する。
FICTIONAL SCHOOL LIBRARY REPORT. A student council surveyed thirty students about the school library. Eighteen said they wanted a later closing time, and twelve preferred the current schedule. The library currently closes at 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. The council has not received permission to change that time. During a discussion, Mei said, ‘Imagine that the library stayed open until six. Some students might finish homework before going home.’ She was explaining a possible benefit, not reporting a trial. The librarian added, ‘If we extended the hours, we would need an adult supervisor.’ The group decided only to ask teachers whether supervision might be available. No extended opening hours had been tested, and no improvement in homework completion had been measured. A student editor wrote that the imagined example should not be presented as a result of the survey.

FICTIONAL GARDEN CLUB JOURNAL. Members measured how much water they used in a small school garden. They recorded twenty-four liters on Monday and twenty liters on Tuesday. The numbers came from a measuring container, and the teacher checked the log. A student suggested using collected rainwater next month. He said, ‘Suppose that half of the garden’s water could come from rain. We might reduce the amount of tap water we need.’ The teacher replied that this was a possible scenario, not an observed saving. No rainwater collection system had been installed. Another student asked whether the plants would grow equally well with the proposed method, but the club had no data to answer that question. The club agreed to design a small trial and to measure plant growth as well as water use. The report did not claim that tap-water consumption had already fallen by half.

FICTIONAL MUSEUM GUIDE TEST. Three visitors tried an English guide at a local museum. Two of the visitors said that its map labels were difficult to read. The third visitor reported no problem with the labels. The volunteers therefore enlarged the lettering in a new draft, but they had not tested the revised guide. During a meeting, a volunteer asked, ‘What if a hundred international visitors arrived at the same time? We could offer an audio version as well.’ This was an imagined situation for planning, not a description of a real event. The museum had not produced an audio version, and it had not received a group of one hundred international visitors. The coordinator requested another small test of the printed guide first. She warned that the needs of a large group could not be concluded from feedback given by only three people.

FICTIONAL STUDENT CLUB MEETING. A class surveyed twenty-eight students about extra English reading practice. Fifteen preferred meeting in person, nine preferred an online session, and four wanted no additional session. These were the actual survey results. The teacher said, ‘Imagine everyone had a reliable internet connection. An online meeting might then be practical for more students.’ She immediately added that this assumption had not been checked. Five students had previously mentioned problems with home internet access. The council also considered a recorded lesson, which could be watched at different times but would not allow immediate questions. The only confirmed decision was to ask students about access and teacher availability before selecting a format. No online session or recorded lesson had yet taken place, and no improvement in reading scores had been measured.
