Can you swim?は泳げる能力、May I come in? You must wear a helmet.は着用義務、You should rest.
can・could・may・must・should・have toを区別
|---|---|---|
| can | 能力・可能・許可など | I can swim. |
| could | 過去の一般的能力・丁寧な依頼など | I could swim at age six. |
| may | 許可・可能性など | May I come in? |
| must | 必要・強い義務 | You must wear a helmet. |
| must not | 禁止 | You must not take pictures. |
| should | 助言・適切な行動 | You should rest. |
| have to/has to | 必要・義務 | I have to go./She has to go. |
| do not have to | 必須ではない | You don’t have to bring lunch. |
You mustn’t bring a camera. You don’t have to bring a camera.
助動詞can・could・may・must・shouldの後ろには、通常toを置かず動詞の原形を使います。have toはtoを含む形なので、三単現has toや否定のdoesn’t have toなど、文の主語や時制にも注意しましょう。
