英検3級や中学英語の定期テストで、too tired to study と old enough to join を同じように訳していませんか。too＋形容詞・副詞＋to do は「〜するには程度が過ぎる」、形容詞・副詞＋enough＋to do は「〜できるほど十分に〜だ」という意味が基本です。The bag is too heavy for me to carry. は私には運べないほど重い、The bag is light enough for me to carry. は運べるほど軽いという意味になります。さらに too many books と too much homework は、数えられる名詞か不可算名詞かによって形が変わります。本記事では慶英会オリジナルの独自40問と全問解説、書き換え8問、独自英文2本、14日復習法まで無料公開します。

too … toとenough toは何が違うか
too heavy to carry：程度が過ぎて行動しにくい
This bag is too heavy for me to carry. は、私がそのかばんを運ぶには重すぎるという意味です。tooの後ろにheavyという形容詞、次にfor meで行動の主体を示し、to carryで行動を表します。「重い」という事実だけではなく、運ぶという行動に対して重さが過剰である点が重要です。
The music is too loud to study. も「音楽が勉強するにはうるさすぎる」という趣旨ですが、何をどこで勉強するかを明確にするなら The music is too loud for me to study. と書けます。too … toは物理的に絶対不可能という保証ではなく、ある行動には過剰・不適切な程度だという意味を伝える表現です。
light enough to carry：行動に必要な条件を満たす
The box is light enough for the child to lift. では箱の重さが子どもにとって持ち上げられる水準にあります。enoughは形容詞の後ろに置き、light enough とします。enough light to lift のような語順は、この意味では正しくありません。
She speaks slowly enough for beginners to understand. は、副詞slowlyをenoughが修飾しています。形容詞だけでなく副詞も slowly enough / quickly enough / clearly enough のようにenoughの前に置けます。enoughの位置は学校の語順整序で頻出する確認点です。
too many・too much・enough＋名詞の違い
- too many＋複数可算名詞：too many books / too many students
- too much＋不可算名詞：too much homework / too much water
- enough＋名詞：enough books / enough water / enough time
- 形容詞＋enough：old enough / strong enough / tall enough
- 副詞＋enough：slowly enough / clearly enough
- not＋形容詞＋enough：not old enough / not wide enough
We have too many chairs. は必要な数より椅子が多すぎる、We have enough chairs. は十分な数があるという意味です。There is too much water. は多すぎ、There is enough water. は足りる量があります。enoughが名詞の前か後ろかは修飾先によって変わるため、名詞と形容詞を混同しないようにします。
not … enoughは『基準に届かない』
I am not old enough to enter. は入場に必要な年齢の基準を満たしていないという意味です。The room isn’t big enough for everyone. は部屋の広さが必要な水準に達していません。too … toが「過剰な程度」を表すのに対し、not … enoughは「不足」を表します。
たとえば too heavy for me to carry を not light enough for me to carry と言い換えれば近い意味になりますが、英語での表現のニュアンスや程度は完全に一致するとは限りません。学校の書き換え問題では、形容詞の反対語を使って同じ状況を表す意図を確認しましょう。
語順整序でよくある誤りと直し方
enough tall → tall enough、too many homework → too much homework、too tired finish → too tired to finish のように、誤答を3つの型へ分けます。enoughの位置・可算不可算・to不定詞の欠落は、それぞれ別の失点原因です。
It is too cold to swim outside. では主語Itが天候を表し、to以下の泳ぐ行為に適さない程度であることを説明します。The water is warm enough to swim in. はwaterという場所・対象で泳ぐため、最後の前置詞inが必要です。英作文の際は、「to do」の後の動詞が何を目的語にとるかも確かめてください。
また、too には「〜も」の意味もあります。I like music, too. は『私も音楽が好き』で、too many songs のような過剰を表すtooとは違います。綴りが同じでも前後の語により働きが変わります。
英検3級のtoo・enough独自40問
問1〜18は選択、19〜26は誤文訂正、27〜34は書き換え・和訳、35〜40は独自英文2本の読解です。問題を解くときは①名詞の可算性 ②形容詞・副詞か名詞か ③必要な行動・基準の順に確認しましょう。独自問題の選択肢数は英検公式の4肢選択とは異なります。

答え合わせでは「tooは過剰」「enoughは十分」という訳だけでなく、なぜその程度では行動できないのか、足りる・足りないの対象は何かを説明してください。英作文には文脈に合う別解があり得ます。

Q. too … toは『絶対に不可能』という意味ですか？
A. 必ずしも絶対不可能とは限りません。ある行動を行うには程度が過ぎる、不適切であるという趣旨を表します。文脈と話し手の判断に注意してください。
Q. enoughは名詞の前、形容詞の後でよいですか？
A. 基本的に enough time のように名詞の前、old enough のように形容詞の後です。副詞も slowly enough とします。
Q. too manyとtoo muchはどう違いますか？
A. too manyは可算複数名詞、too muchは不可算名詞と組み合わせます。too many books / too much homework を対で覚えてください。
Q. too heavyとnot light enoughはまったく同じですか？
