Last spring, Miku’s class decided to learn about butterflies living near their school. Their science teacher suggested visiting three small areas in the school garden. The students walked quietly, took photographs, and wrote down the colors of butterflies they saw. They were told not to touch the butterflies or their plants.
During the first week, the group saw more butterflies near the flower beds than beside a large wall. Some students thought the flowers were the only reason, but the teacher asked them to be careful. The weather and the time of day could also affect the number of butterflies they saw. The class decided to visit the same places at the same time every week for a month.
After four weeks, the students made a chart. The number of butterflies was different on each visit. They learned that one afternoon of watching was not enough to explain what happened throughout the season. Miku was happy because her class had learned to observe without harming small animals.
Next term, the class hopes to compare photographs and counts from another month. Miku now understands that careful records are more useful than guessing.
What were the students told not to do?
- Take photographs.
- Write notes.
- Touch butterflies or their plants.
- Visit the garden.
Where did the group see more butterflies in the first week?
- Near the flower beds.
- Beside the large wall.
- Inside the school library.
- Near the train station.
Why did the teacher ask students not to decide the cause too quickly?
- The photos were too large.
- The school had no garden.
- They could not read the map.
- Weather and time of day could also affect the counts.
What did the class learn after four weeks?
- The number never changed.
- One visit could not explain the whole season.
- No butterflies lived near school.
- Every plant needed more water.
What does the class plan to do next term?
- Stop observing butterflies.
- Build a new school.
- Compare records from another month.
- Visit another country.

Yes, I do. Nature projects help students notice animals and plants around them. They also teach us to observe carefully without harming living things, so I enjoy them.
