Subject: Important Information for Saturday’s Research Exhibition
Dear Presenters,
Thank you for registering for the research exhibition at Riverside Community Hall. The exhibition opens to visitors at 10:00 a.m. Presenting teams must arrive at the east entrance between 8:40 and 9:10 a.m. so that staff can inspect displays and check participants’ names.
The main hall will be used for a music rehearsal in the morning, so all student presentations will be held in the smaller sports hall on the first floor. The opening and closing times have not changed. The center will provide one table and two chairs to each team. Students must bring their own posters and any computers they plan to use.
Groups requiring electricity must contact our office by Wednesday at noon. We may not be able to arrange connections for requests received after that time. Equipment producing smoke, strong smells, or large amounts of heat is not allowed.
The exhibition closes at 3:00 p.m., and an awards ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m. The judges will assess how clearly students explain their research questions, methods, and results rather than simply rewarding expensive equipment. Please let us know in advance if anyone needs step-free access.
Kind regards,
Exhibition Office

説明文|木陰のある通りは本当に涼しいか
Trees can make city streets more comfortable by providing shade. However, the decision to plant more trees must take account of costs, pedestrian access, and underground pipes. Young trees also need regular care before they become large enough to provide much shade.
University students in Newford compared temperatures on two shopping streets. One street had several mature trees, while the other had only a few. The first readings were lower on the street with more shade. Some students immediately wanted to conclude that the trees had caused the difference. Their teacher pointed out that the measurements were taken at different times and that the streets had different traffic levels. These factors might also have affected the readings.
In a second study, the group used matching thermometers and collected data at the same times. Students also asked wheelchair users and parents with strollers whether they could travel along the sidewalks easily. Some people reported that tree roots had created uneven areas. The students realized that the location of trees could be as important as the number planted.
The city is considering a small trial rather than immediately changing every street. Officials plan to compare temperatures, maintenance costs, and accessibility over several seasons. They believe tree planting may help with summer heat but should be combined with other measures, such as drinking-water stations and safe resting places.

The Milton Public Library began lending electronic books so residents could borrow reading materials without traveling to the building. People could download titles to their own devices, while printed books remained available for those who preferred them.
Three months after the service started, the number of registered users had increased. Some staff members were pleased and suggested that the new service was successful for residents of all ages. However, registrations alone did not show how often people actually read the books they downloaded. Also, the library had not collected information about people without reliable internet connections.
The library then invited users to describe their experiences. Some said that borrowing from home was convenient. Others found small screens difficult to read or did not understand the steps needed to download a book. In response, the library provided illustrated instructions and began offering free lessons. These activities helped some people feel more comfortable using the website, but their long-term effects were not yet known.
Over the next six months, the library will record both registrations and actual borrowing activity. Staff will also ask people who do not currently use electronic books why they avoid the service. This information will help the library choose between buying additional electronic titles and improving access to the existing collection. Officials say that a growing number of accounts does not prove that every resident can use the service successfully.

- Printed books
- Only movies

説明文|地域の災害情報を多言語で伝えるには
In the town of Fairmont, emergency announcements had traditionally been posted on the official website in one language. Town officials believed that most residents could find the information quickly. However, several community groups reported that some new residents did not understand the announcements and that some older people rarely checked the internet.
The town therefore began preparing simpler messages in several languages and sending short notifications to registered phones. It also placed printed notices at libraries and community centers. Local volunteers helped check the translations, but officials emphasized that only authorized staff could approve the final safety instructions.
During the first two months, more people registered to receive notifications. Some officials called the program successful. Other staff pointed out that registration numbers did not prove that people had understood or followed the advice. The town had also received few responses from residents who did not use smartphones, so the results might not represent everyone who needed help.
To learn more, the town plans to ask residents to complete simple practical tasks, such as identifying a safe meeting point on a map. It will collect feedback from people who prefer printed information as well as from phone users. Officials also intend to review whether the translations remain accurate when emergency procedures change. They hope these steps will improve access without assuming that sending more messages automatically makes everyone safer.

- The town decided to end emergency services

説明文|地元市場の野菜販売で分かったこと
A group of farmers in Brookside wanted to reduce food waste by selling vegetables that were smaller or shaped differently from those usually displayed in supermarkets. The farmers opened a weekend market stall and sold these vegetables in discounted bags. They believed the project might help customers save money while allowing more harvested food to be used.
At first, only a few bags were sold. The farmers asked visitors why they had not purchased them. Some said they did not realize that unusual shapes did not necessarily affect taste or quality. Others were confused because the bags did not clearly show what was inside. The farmers therefore added signs explaining the products and made the labels easier to read.
Sales increased in the following month. The organizers thought the new signs might have helped. However, the weather had also improved, and a popular town festival was held nearby on several weekends. Because more people visited the area for the festival, the farmers could not be certain how much of the increase was caused by the signs alone.
The farmers decided to continue the trial for another season and record how many bags remained unsold each week. They also plan to compare the cost of preparing the discounted bags with the money earned from sales. Before expanding to more locations, they will ask customers whether they would buy the vegetables at regular prices and how often they actually use everything they purchase. The organizers say that higher sales can be encouraging, but they do not automatically prove that total food waste has decreased.
問28|Why did the farmers sell unusual-looking vegetables?
- To use more harvested food and reduce waste
- To stop all customers from buying regular vegetables
- To replace the town’s supermarkets
- To teach people how to build market stalls
