英検2級の長文や英作文で Could you tell me where the room is? と Where is the room? の語順が混ざってしまう方へ。英語では質問を別の文に組み込むとき、間接疑問文を用います。where・when・whyの後ろの語順、whether / ifの『〜かどうか』、whether to doの形、whoやwhatが主語になる文は特に間違えやすい部分です。慶英会では間接疑問の独自4択30問、誤文修正12問、オリジナル長文2題・内容一致6問を制作しました。NEW TREASUREなどの学校英文法を英検2級Reading・Writingへつなぐ練習教材です。

結論｜間接疑問文の中は基本的に『疑問詞＋主語＋動詞』

Where is the room? は直接疑問ですが、Could you tell me where the room is? に組み込むとwhere＋the room＋isの語順です。また、Do you know what caused the delay? のwhatは主語なので、不必要なdidを加えません。『〜かどうか』にはwhether/ifを使い、whether to doのような不定詞の形も覚えましょう。

英検2級の公式出題形式との関係

英検協会の2級試験内容ではReadingに短文空所17問、長文空所6問、内容一致8問があり、Writingでは英文要約と意見英作文が出題されます。間接疑問文だけの独立した公式大問はありませんが、語順を理解することは長文読解・自然な英文作成に役立ちます。

オリジナル長文1｜図書館の新しい予約方式

A town library has introduced an online reservation system. Many residents asked whether they could still reserve books by telephone. The library manager explained that both methods would remain available. Staff also wanted to know which books were requested most often, so they began recording weekly reservations. Some visitors asked when the study rooms would open on weekends, but the manager said no decision had been made. The library will review demand and maintenance costs before changing its schedule.

オリジナル長文2｜学校の科学見学

A teacher was organizing a visit to a science museum. She asked the museum whether students could bring their own notebooks and where the group should meet. よくある質問

間接疑問文では必ず疑問符を付けますか？

文全体が質問なら疑問符を使いますが、I don’t know where he lives. のような平叙文なら通常ピリオドです。

ifとwhetherは必ず交換できますか？

交換できる場合もありますが、whether to doのようにwhetherを用いる表現があるため、常に同じではありません。

Do you know who did organize … は誤りですか？

通常の中立的な問いではwho organized … が自然です。強調用のdidが別の文脈で使われることはありますが、基本形を最初に身に付けましょう。
