Subject: Information for Friday’s Science Center Visit

Dear Teachers,

Thank you for registering your classes for the Greenfield Science Center visit on Friday, November 6. The main presentation about renewable energy will begin at 10:00 a.m. and last forty minutes. Your group should arrive at the east entrance by 9:40 a.m. so that staff can check the attendance list before the presentation.

Unfortunately, the solar energy demonstration in the outdoor garden will not take place that day because the equipment is being repaired. Instead, students will participate in an indoor experiment about reducing heat loss in buildings. This activity will use materials provided by the center, so students do not need to bring laboratory equipment.

Students should bring a notebook and a pencil. Lunch will be available in the cafeteria for those who ordered it when they registered. Students who did not order lunch should bring their own meals because same-day orders cannot be accepted.

If your class needs an accessible entrance or a quiet waiting space, please contact our office by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. We will send a confirmation email the next morning. The visit itself is free, although participants are responsible for their transportation costs.

During hot summers, some streets become much warmer than nearby parks. Researchers explain that roads and buildings can absorb sunlight during the day and release heat slowly. Trees may help people feel cooler by providing shade. They also release water vapor through their leaves, although the amount depends on the weather and the type of tree.

To learn whether planting trees would improve conditions along a shopping street, a group of university students collected temperature readings. They compared one section with several mature trees and another section with few trees. Their first results showed lower temperatures in the shaded section. However, the students had taken measurements at different times, and the streets had different traffic levels. They realized that these differences might have affected the readings.

The students then designed a second study. They used matching thermometers, recorded temperatures at the same times, and noted whether the sidewalks were shaded. They also asked people using wheelchairs and parents with strollers whether tree roots made the paths difficult to use. These comments revealed that choosing the location of new trees was just as important as the number planted.

The city government is considering a small trial rather than immediately planting trees along the entire street. Maintenance costs, access to underground pipes, and the space needed for pedestrians must be considered. Officials plan to measure conditions over several seasons and publish the results. Even if the trial is successful, they say that tree planting should be combined with other measures, such as providing drinking water and improving access to public buildings during extreme heat.

問27 According to the passage, how can trees make streets more comfortable?

  1. By stopping all sunlight from reaching buildings.
  2. By providing shade and releasing water vapor.
  3. By lowering traffic without other changes.
  4. By removing underground pipes.

B By providing shade and releasing water vapor.。

28 Why did the students question their first findings?

  1. They had collected no temperature readings.
  2. No streets with trees were included.
  3. The two areas were measured at different times and had different traffic levels.
  4. They discovered that thermometers could not be used outdoors.

C The two areas were measured at different times and had different traffic levels.。

29 What did interviews with sidewalk users help the students understand?

  1. People wanted every tree removed.
  2. Wheelchair users preferred private cars.
  3. Older trees never need maintenance.
  4. The placement of trees affects how easily people can use paths.

D The placement of trees affects how easily people can use paths.。

30 What will the local government do before planting trees along the entire street?

  1. Consider a smaller trial and measure conditions across seasons.
  2. Plant all the trees without checking underground pipes.
  3. Ask students to replace the city’s engineers.
  4. Close public buildings during summer.

A Consider a smaller trial and measure conditions across seasons.。considering a small trial、measure conditions over several seasons が根拠。

31 What is the writer’s main message?

  1. Tree planting is too dangerous to consider in any city.
  2. Trees may help with heat, but their effects and practical limits should be examined.
  3. There is no relationship between shade and temperature.
  4. Every shopping street should use exactly the same design.

B Trees may help with heat, but their effects and practical limits should be examined.。

Many libraries offer free computers, but some people still find it difficult to use online public services. Older residents and people with limited digital experience may struggle to complete application forms or find reliable information. To help them, several libraries have started small digital support sessions in which trained volunteers explain basic computer skills.

These sessions can make online services easier to use and reduce the need for repeated visits to public offices. However, they also create challenges. Volunteers may not understand every government procedure, and users sometimes bring private documents or passwords. Libraries therefore need clear rules about privacy and must avoid giving advice beyond their expertise.

Some libraries now work with local government offices to prepare accurate guidance materials. They also teach volunteers when to refer questions to official staff. These steps can improve the support offered, but organizing and updating the materials requires time and money.

Some libraries provide digital support sessions to help people use online public services. Volunteers can improve access and reduce unnecessary visits to offices. However, privacy concerns and complicated procedures create risks. Libraries address these problems by working with government staff and preparing reliable guidance, although keeping the service updated requires resources.

TOPIC: Do you think schools should spend more time teaching students how to check information online?

POINTS: Education / Safety / Time

I think schools should teach students how to check information online. First, teenagers often read news and opinions on websites and social media. Learning to compare sources would help them avoid believing misleading claims. Second, these skills are useful when students prepare reports. For example, they can examine who wrote an article and whether its evidence supports its conclusion. Some teachers may worry that lessons will take time away from other subjects. However, schools could include short information-checking activities in science, history, and English classes. This would improve students’ research habits without adding an entirely new course.
