Paragraph 1:In a fictional region surrounded by hills, historians long believed that an ancient trading road followed a river for most of its length. Their interpretation drew on pottery fragments and a small number of written descriptions. The idea was reasonable because river valleys provided accessible routes through difficult terrain. However, the records did not identify an exact road, and several fragments had been collected without precise information about the layers in which they were found. The theory was therefore a reconstruction, not a direct observation of a continuous road.
Paragraph 2:Decades later, a research team identified building foundations on higher ground, some of which appeared to date from the period under investigation. The discovery suggested that part of the trading network might have used an upland passage. A few commentators immediately announced that the river route had been disproved. The team rejected that interpretation: evidence for an upland passage did not eliminate the possibility that a river route had operated at another time or served a different purpose. The new findings challenged the idea of one exclusive route rather than every detail of the earlier reconstruction.
Paragraph 3:The researchers compared the new foundations with pottery styles, material composition, and surviving accounts of regional markets. They found that some objects were consistent with movement through higher settlements, but the available evidence could not establish how often goods had traveled along either route. In addition, the discovery of more objects at one location partly reflected the intensity of modern excavation. A place that had barely been investigated could not be treated as historically unimportant simply because fewer objects had been recovered there.
Paragraph 4:The team eventually proposed a map displaying several possible connections. Solid lines indicated links supported by different kinds of evidence; dashed lines represented plausible but unconfirmed passages. This revision was less dramatic than a claim that the old map had been entirely false. Yet it better reflected the distinction between an interpretation revised by new evidence and a conclusion established beyond doubt. Further excavation might change the map again.
Q1:Why had the river-route theory originally seemed reasonable?
- (A) Historians had directly observed the road.
- (B) Rivers had been completely closed to trade.
- (C) The route matched geographical possibilities and some surviving evidence.
- (D) Every ancient merchant had left a written itinerary.
Q2:What did the discovery of upland foundations change?
- (A) It challenged the claim that one river route was exclusive.
- (B) It proved that river routes had never existed.
- (C) It showed every old pottery fragment was forged.
- (D) It established precisely how often goods moved.
Q3:What complication affected comparisons of finds?
- (A) All sites had been excavated equally.
- (B) Researchers intentionally hid every upland find.
- (C) The older archives had recorded the exact age of every fragment.
- (D) Unequal excavation intensity could influence the number of objects recovered.
Q4:Why did the team use solid and dashed lines?
- (A) To avoid discussing uncertainty.
- (B) To distinguish better-supported links from unconfirmed possibilities.
- (C) To illustrate two modern railway systems.
- (D) To show that every route had been permanently verified.
Paragraph 1:A fictional municipality introduced vegetation around public buildings and measured local temperatures during the first summer. Its initial report emphasized that some planted areas appeared cooler than nearby paved spaces. Officials described the difference as evidence that vegetation could be useful in reducing exposure to heat. A newspaper, however, summarized the research as proof that all neighborhoods would become cooler if they planted the same number of trees. The researchers had not made such a broad claim, because their observations came from only a few locations and the surrounding conditions differed.
Paragraph 2:A later team reviewed the project using measurements collected at several times of day. Its analysis suggested that the early temperature comparisons had overlooked shade from existing buildings and variations in wind. Some planted sites remained cooler under the revised analysis, but the estimated size of the effect changed. The revised results did not show that planting had been useless. Rather, they suggested that its contribution varied according to the built environment and the time at which temperatures were measured.
Paragraph 3:The two teams also measured somewhat different outcomes. The first report focused on temperatures recorded at individual points; the follow-up examined how people moved between shaded and unshaded areas. Visitors sometimes preferred a shaded walkway even when a nearby sensor recorded only a modest temperature difference. The researchers cautioned that preference, surface temperature, and protection from heat-related harm were not interchangeable indicators. Each could supply useful information, but none independently established the full effect of an urban heat policy.
Paragraph 4:The municipality responded by continuing a limited set of projects while comparing vegetation with other approaches, including suitable indoor cooling spaces and changes to building design. It requested longer-term evaluation of maintenance needs, public access, and benefits during unusually hot periods. The new research had refined the earlier interpretation; it had not justified either universal expansion or complete abandonment.
Q5:What had the newspaper exaggerated?
- (A) It claimed there were no measured differences anywhere.
- (B) It said the researchers had prohibited planting.
- (C) It denied that buildings could create shade.
- (D) It generalized results from a few sites to every neighborhood.
Q6:What did the revised analysis suggest?
- (A) That the original observations were fabricated.
- (B) That the estimated effect depended partly on other local conditions.
- (C) That every planted area was warmer.
- (D) That shade had no relevance to the findings.
Q7:Why did the author discuss different outcome measures?
- (A) To show that preferences, measured temperatures, and protection from harm are distinct.
- (B) To establish that visitors’ opinions were worthless.
- (C) To prove all methods measure exactly the same thing.
- (D) To argue that no additional evaluation is necessary.
Q8:What decision did officials make?
- (A) To expand the program permanently to every neighborhood.
- (B) To close all cooling services immediately.
- (C) To continue limited projects while comparing alternatives and collecting evidence.
- (D) To dismiss every previous measurement as false.
