Passage 1|
Paragraph 1:A fictional regional archive began scanning handwritten letters so that students could examine them without handling fragile originals. Supporters expected the project to broaden access and make historical study easier. The archive’s first report highlighted a rapid increase in digital downloads, which attracted favorable attention.
Paragraph 2:Yet the number of files obtained did not show whether readers understood when each letter was written or whose viewpoint it represented. [1] Some documents described a controversial building project as widely supported, while other records revealed objections from residents who had rarely appeared in official accounts.
Paragraph 3:Privacy posed a different challenge. Several relatively recent letters included details about people who had never consented to unrestricted publication. [2] Staff therefore needed to distinguish material suitable for open access from documents requiring review, while still making general descriptions available.
Paragraph 4:The governing board weighed these concerns before deciding whether the entire collection should be released. [3] It also requested an evaluation of whether students could interpret the records responsibly instead of treating download totals as a sufficient measure of success.
- (A) Therefore, every digital file had already been interpreted correctly.
- (B) Consequently, contextual information about dates, authors, and competing accounts became important.
- (C) The archive had completed the legal review of every document years earlier.
- (D) The number of downloads proved that all readers shared the same interpretation.
- (A) However, the archive concluded that every recent letter was worthless.
- (B) For that reason, the staff decided to publish all identifying details immediately.
- (C) These concerns were unrelated to how the materials would be shared.
- (D) The archive had to balance public research access with the protection of individuals.
- (A) It approved a limited release of documents that passed contextual and privacy checks.
- (B) It immediately released every record without restrictions.
- (C) It prohibited students from consulting any historical materials.
- (D) It replaced the archive’s entire collection with unrelated textbooks.
Paragraph 1:A fictional town introduced a small evening bus service for residents whose work ended after the last regular departure. During the trial, the transport office recorded more reservations than expected. Some officials interpreted the figure as proof that the program had solved local transport barriers.
Paragraph 2:An evaluator cautioned that reservations could be repeated by existing passengers, while people living far from the new stops might still be unable to travel. [1] The office therefore began comparing unique users, completed journeys, and the experience of residents who did not use the service.
Paragraph 3:The trial also created budget questions. A later bus could help some workers, but staffing costs would increase and the service might require support beyond ticket revenue. [2] The evaluator suggested testing a limited set of schedule changes instead of promising that every route would operate overnight.
Paragraph 4:Community groups welcomed the trial but asked the office to examine accessibility, reliability, and the cost of necessary journeys. The council considered these requests along with the financial evidence. [3] It did not conclude that the service was useless, nor did it approve permanent expansion throughout the town.
- (A) Every new passenger had already received a free ticket.
- (B) The reservation count was an exact measure of households no longer facing barriers.
- (C) High activity among current users and new access for previously excluded residents were different outcomes.
- (D) The service had completely replaced all routes in remote areas.
- (A) Lower fares alone would not address a service that ended before residents finished work.
- (B) The transport office had confirmed that operating expenses would fall to zero.
- (C) Every worker had switched to a private car during the trial.
- (D) The town had approved unlimited funds for overnight operations.
- (A) The council immediately abolished every bus route.
- (B) Officials announced that increased bookings guaranteed fair access.
- (C) All overnight service was made permanently free for every resident.
- (D) It chose to continue the trial while postponing a permanent increase in service until access and funding could be assessed.
Passage 3|
Paragraph 1:A fictional training center offered technical courses to adults seeking new employment opportunities. Registration numbers increased after the center introduced online modules and flexible evening sessions. The director welcomed the interest and argued that the program could help workers adapt to changing requirements.
Paragraph 2:However, the center’s initial report focused on course registrations, not demonstrated competence. Some learners registered for several modules, while others stopped attending before their practical assessment. [1] Employers also reported that candidates sometimes understood technical terms but needed more supervised experience before handling unfamiliar equipment safely.
Paragraph 3:Staff proposed revising the final assessment so that participants would solve problems they had not practiced in precisely the same form. They also wanted to examine whether lower-income applicants could afford the required equipment and transport. [2] The director acknowledged that a higher completion rate could be encouraging, but it was not a guarantee of suitable employment.
Paragraph 4:The governing committee reviewed these proposals and considered the center’s limited budget. [3] Its decision kept the educational program operating while making a stronger evaluation necessary before broader promises about job outcomes could be justified.
- (A) All registered students had already demonstrated identical skills.
- (B) The report therefore needed to distinguish enrollment, completion, and practical competence.
- (C) The center had stopped every form of practical assessment.
- (D) Employers had agreed that certification alone guaranteed safe work.
- (A) All employment outcomes were therefore guaranteed.
- (B) Every learner already owned suitable equipment.
- (C) The new assessment had eliminated the need for any instructor.
- (D) The availability of suitable jobs was another outcome that required separate evaluation.
- (A) It authorized a limited trial with clearer practical assessments and better measures of access.
- (B) It permanently closed the training center without evaluation.
- (C) It promised employment to every participant immediately.
- (D) It removed all safety checks to reduce costs.
Paragraph 1:A fictional science museum began offering exhibition guides in several languages. The organizers hoped that residents who were not comfortable reading the main language of the displays could participate more fully. Their first report celebrated a growing number of translated pages and downloads.
Paragraph 2:Visitor representatives welcomed the effort but warned that the amount of translated material did not establish its usefulness. Some documents contained unfamiliar technical terms, and certain diagrams were difficult to understand without additional explanation. [1] The museum therefore asked visitors to perform simple tasks with the materials rather than rely exclusively on the download count.
Paragraph 3:Translation quality raised another issue. Staff considered using automatic translation tools to prepare draft text more quickly, but scientists and language specialists stressed the need to verify important details. A small error involving a measurement unit, for instance, could change the meaning of an explanation. [2] The museum proposed a review system for essential information and a visible process for correcting mistakes after release.
Paragraph 4:An independent committee recommended retaining the new materials while testing how well different groups could use them. It also requested cost estimates for keeping translations updated. [3] The final decision was therefore neither to abandon multilingual access nor to assume that producing more pages alone would guarantee understanding.
- (A) These problems proved that all multilingual visitors disliked science.
- (B) Consequently, the museum could close its exhibitions immediately.
- (C) Availability of information and actual comprehension were separate outcomes.
- (D) Every new download had already improved visitor knowledge.
- (A) Automated drafting could save time, but it could not replace responsibility for the accuracy of final instructions.
- (B) The museum had proved that no translation review would ever be needed.
- (C) All scientific measurements could be changed without consequence.
- (D) The specialists opposed every use of technology in translation.
- (A) The museum immediately withdrew every translated guide.
- (B) All visitor concerns were declared false.
- (C) Staff were prohibited from updating released materials.
- (D) The board accepted a limited continuation with evaluation before wider expansion.
