That is a fair concern. / I agree that cost matters.
The outcome depends on … / Not necessarily …
Therefore, I would support … only if …

Interviewer — Main question: Should companies use AI to screen job applicants?

Candidate — Initial response: Companies may use automated tools for initial screening, but high-impact decisions should allow explanation and human review. Speed is valuable only if applicants can challenge errors.

Interviewer: Isn’t requiring a human review too expensive for smaller employers?

Candidate — Model answer: That is a reasonable concern. Oversight should be proportionate to risk; routine sorting may need periodic checks, while final rejections based on sensitive factors should have a practical appeal process.

Interviewer: What if a human reviewer is biased as well?

Candidate — Model answer: Human review is not automatically fair. Employers should compare outcomes across relevant groups, train reviewers, and document corrections rather than assuming either humans or machines are infallible.

Interviewer — Main question: Should governments introduce carbon taxes?

Candidate — Initial response: A carefully designed carbon tax can encourage lower emissions, but I would support it only with measures protecting households that face disproportionate energy costs.

Interviewer: Wouldn’t that make life harder for lower-income families?

Candidate — Model answer: It could. Targeted rebates or improvements to affordable transport can reduce that burden while retaining incentives to use energy more efficiently.

Interviewer: If households receive rebates, won’t the tax lose its purpose?

Candidate — Model answer: The design matters. Support can be distributed according to need without necessarily removing the price signal for additional energy use. Policymakers should evaluate actual behavior and financial effects.

Interviewer — Main question: Should all public transport be free?

Candidate — Initial response: I would prioritize reliable routes and targeted fare assistance rather than universal free travel. A zero fare is not useful if services are inaccessible or too infrequent.

Interviewer: Isn’t targeted assistance unfair to people just above the eligibility threshold?

Candidate — Model answer: Threshold effects are a legitimate concern. A graduated discount could avoid a sudden loss of support while keeping resources focused on people with greater needs.

Interviewer: Would charging fares discourage people from leaving their cars?

Candidate — Model answer: Possibly, but price is only one factor. Frequency, safety, and the availability of suitable routes also affect choices, so fare policy should be evaluated alongside service quality.

Interviewer — Main question: Should cities invest heavily in flood prediction technology?

Candidate — Initial response: Predictive tools can help authorities recognize threats, but I would invest in accessible warnings and evacuation support as well. Accurate forecasts are not the same as effective protection.

Interviewer: Wouldn’t it be cheaper just to improve forecasting systems?

Candidate — Model answer: Forecasting may be efficient in some areas, but a warning has little value if residents cannot receive or act on it. Cities should identify the main obstacle before deciding where extra spending will help most.

Interviewer: What if residents simply ignore official warnings?

Candidate — Model answer: Authorities should examine why: the instructions may be unclear, inaccessible, or inconsistent with earlier experiences. Better communication and practical options may help, though no system can guarantee compliance.

Interviewer — Main question: Should all publicly funded research data be open?

Candidate — Initial response: Publicly funded research should be as transparent as possible, but detailed records containing sensitive information may require controlled access and careful documentation.

Interviewer: Doesn’t restricting records prevent independent scientists from verifying results?

Candidate — Model answer: It can make verification harder. Institutions should provide clear methods and arrange secure access for qualified researchers instead of treating secrecy as the only alternative to full publication.

Interviewer: What if only established universities receive permission?

Candidate — Model answer: That would raise concerns about fairness. Access criteria should be public, consistent, and open to legitimate researchers who satisfy reasonable security conditions, regardless of institutional prestige.

Interviewer — Main question: Should universities require internships for every student?

Candidate — Initial response: Practical experience is valuable, but universities should offer flexible ways to achieve it, such as supervised projects or laboratory placements, rather than one rigid requirement.

Interviewer: Wouldn’t optional internships favor students with better personal connections?

Candidate — Model answer: That is a strong reason to provide institutional support. Universities could arrange transparent opportunities and assess learning outcomes instead of leaving access to private networks.

Interviewer: Could project work really substitute for workplace experience?

Candidate — Model answer: Not in every discipline. The appropriate activity should match the skills being developed and be assessed transparently; some professions will need direct supervised practice.

Interviewer — Main question: Should employers introduce a four-day working week?

Candidate — Initial response: A shorter week may improve well-being in some occupations. I would begin with carefully evaluated pilots rather than require the same arrangement across every industry.

Interviewer: What if customer service deteriorates during the pilot?

Candidate — Model answer: That would be important evidence. Employers may need staggered schedules or additional staffing, and they should reconsider the trial if essential service levels cannot be maintained.

Interviewer: Isn’t employee happiness enough to judge whether it works?

Candidate — Model answer: Well-being matters, but not alone. A responsible evaluation should also consider workload, service quality, job security, and whether benefits are shared fairly across employees.

Interviewer — Main question: Should museums digitize most of their collections?

Candidate — Initial response: Digital collections can expand access and reduce handling of fragile originals. However, institutions must also document provenance and respect cultural concerns about publication.

Interviewer: Doesn’t consultation slow down the release of useful educational materials?

Candidate — Model answer: Yes, it can, and delays have costs. But publishing poorly described objects may create lasting confusion or harm, so review should focus first on items where historical or cultural questions are significant.

Interviewer: Should disputed artifacts remain completely inaccessible?

Candidate — Model answer: Not necessarily. Institutions might provide descriptions, controlled research access, or collaboratively agreed forms of display while questions about the physical objects continue to be addressed.

Interviewer — Main question: Should governments expand telemedicine?

Candidate — Initial response: Telemedicine can improve access for patients who face long journeys, but it should complement rather than automatically replace in-person care.

Interviewer: Could remote consultations miss important physical symptoms?

Candidate — Model answer: Yes, particularly when examination or diagnostic equipment is needed. Providers should establish clear criteria for referring patients to in-person appointments.

Interviewer: What if patients lack reliable internet or suitable devices?

Candidate — Model answer: That would create an access barrier. Telephone services, accessible local facilities, and continued face-to-face options can help prevent digital expansion from excluding the people who most need care.

Interviewer — Main question: Should governments expand video surveillance in public areas?

Candidate — Initial response: Some targeted use may be justified for serious safety problems, but surveillance should have clear purposes, limited data retention, and independent oversight.

Interviewer: If surveillance prevents harm, why impose restrictive rules?

Candidate — Model answer: Effectiveness should be demonstrated rather than presumed. Without limits, the same system could collect unnecessary information about people who pose no threat.

Interviewer: Would strict oversight slow down responses to emergencies?

Candidate — Model answer: Emergency procedures can be designed in advance with defined safeguards. The goal is to allow proportionate action while ensuring that exceptional powers do not become routine without review.

Interviewer — Main question: Should voting be compulsory?

Candidate — Initial response: I am cautious about compulsory voting. Higher participation can be valuable, but mandatory attendance does not necessarily produce informed decisions.

Interviewer: Isn’t a low turnout itself a serious democratic problem?

Candidate — Model answer: It can weaken representation, and governments should address it. Easier registration, accessible polling, and reliable civic information may reduce barriers without immediately imposing penalties.

Interviewer: What if these voluntary measures fail?

Candidate — Model answer: Then policymakers should evaluate compulsory voting more seriously, including enforcement costs and individual freedoms. I would want evidence that it addresses the underlying barriers rather than only increasing the reported turnout.

Interviewer — Main question: Should governments fund retraining for workers affected by automation?

Candidate — Initial response: Targeted support can help workers adapt when occupations change, but programs should be assessed by useful skills and employment opportunities rather than enrollment alone.

Interviewer: Why should taxpayers pay for a company’s decision to automate?

Candidate — Model answer: Employers should contribute, particularly when they benefit directly. Limited public support may still be justified because technological changes can affect whole communities and produce wider economic benefits.

Interviewer: What if retraining graduates still cannot find jobs?

Candidate — Model answer: That would require closer evaluation of the course and local labor demand. Completion certificates alone are insufficient; the program may need employer partnerships or a different focus.

Could you please repeat the question?
