- Q&Aは4分間。
例:science funding → public knowledge / long-term risk。
I support it, provided that funding is independently reviewed。

TOPIC:Should governments fund scientific research even when its practical applications are uncertain?
I believe governments should continue to fund scientific research even when its immediate applications are uncertain. Public support is justified for three reasons: long-term knowledge, the distribution of risk, and the value of independent inquiry. First, research often produces benefits that were not predicted when a project began. A study designed to understand a biological process, for example, may eventually inspire new diagnostic methods. If public funding is limited to projects with obvious commercial outcomes, potentially important lines of inquiry could disappear before their value becomes clear. Second, private companies have legitimate reasons to concentrate on projects that can generate revenue within a reasonable period. However, some scientific questions require decades of work, specialized facilities, or cooperation between institutions. Public investment can support efforts that individual companies may be unable or unwilling to finance. Third, publicly funded research can create knowledge that is shared widely. That does not mean every discovery should be free of restrictions, but transparency and independent scrutiny can help prevent important evidence from being controlled by a single commercial interest. Of course, uncertainty is not a reason to spend money without oversight. Governments should require clear research plans, independent evaluation, and periodic reviews, while accepting that some responsible projects will not produce immediate breakthroughs. Overall, the objective should not be to guarantee success in every experiment. It should be to create conditions in which valuable discoveries remain possible, even when their outcomes cannot be predicted.
Q1. Doesn’t this approach waste taxpayers’ money?
Some projects will not lead to practical results, so accountability is essential. However, judging all research by immediate commercial returns would also overlook long-term public benefits.
Q2. Who should decide which projects receive funding?
Independent specialists should evaluate scientific quality, but funding bodies should also consider public value and conflicts of interest. Decisions need transparent criteria rather than political popularity alone.
Q3. How would you measure a project’s success?
I would examine its methods, published findings and contribution to later work, not only patents or profits. Failure to confirm a hypothesis can also be informative if the research is rigorous.
Q4. Should private companies pay more for basic research?
They can contribute through partnerships, but their incentives are not identical to those of the public. A mixed funding system can reduce dependence on any single source.
Q5. Could more funding reduce pressure on researchers to work efficiently?
It could, unless institutions use clear milestones and review procedures. Long-term support should not mean unlimited or unexamined support.
Q6. What should happen when an expensive project produces no useful results?
Decision-makers should review whether the methods were sound and whether continuing is justified. Ending a project responsibly is different from assuming that all uncertain research was wasteful.
Q7. Why is transparency important?
It allows other researchers to scrutinize results and helps the public see how funds are being used. Some privacy or security restrictions may still be necessary.
Q8. Would your view change during an economic recession?
Priorities would become more difficult, and emergency needs might deserve precedence. Even then, cutting every long-term research program could damage future capacity.
TOPIC:Should media literacy be compulsory at universities?
I think universities should make media literacy a compulsory part of undergraduate education, although the course should be adaptable to different disciplines. First, students increasingly encounter information through systems that select and rank material for them. Understanding how recommendations, advertising, and source credibility work can help them distinguish evidence from popularity. That skill matters whether a student studies engineering, literature, or business. Second, media literacy supports more responsible public discussion. A misleading graph may contain accurate numbers but use a distorted scale, while a convincing headline may omit important uncertainty. Students who learn to examine methods, compare independent sources, and identify missing context can participate in debates without spreading avoidable mistakes. Third, the subject is closely related to professional ethics. Graduates may later prepare reports, communicate scientific results, or make decisions using information they find online. They should understand that selecting or presenting evidence carries responsibilities toward colleagues and the public. A common objection is that university curricula are already overcrowded. I agree that simply adding another large lecture course would be inefficient. Instead, universities could integrate a short, assessed component into existing classes and allow each department to use relevant examples. The goal would not be to tell students which opinions to hold. It would be to teach them how to evaluate claims fairly, recognize uncertainty, and explain why a particular source deserves trust. Those habits are valuable beyond graduation.
Q1. Isn’t this something students should learn at school?
Ideally, basic evaluation skills should be taught earlier. Universities can build on them by examining more complex evidence and discipline-specific communication.
Q2. How can universities avoid telling students what to think?
They should assess the reasoning process, source evaluation and transparency of evidence rather than agreement with an approved opinion. Students should be allowed to defend different conclusions.
Q3. Could this requirement disadvantage science students with crowded schedules?
It could if it were added as a full separate course. A short integrated module using material from each subject would reduce that burden.
Q4. Are social media platforms mainly responsible for misinformation?
Their design affects the speed and reach of claims, but users, publishers and institutions also have responsibilities. Media literacy addresses what individuals can control.
Q5. How would you test whether students improved?
I would give them unfamiliar claims, data visualizations and conflicting sources, then assess how they verify the evidence and explain uncertainty.
Q6. Should universities ban unreliable online sources?
A general ban would be difficult to enforce and could prevent useful critical analysis. Teaching students why a source is unreliable is often more sustainable.
Q7. What if a student cannot find independent sources?
The student should acknowledge the evidence gap instead of inventing certainty. They can explain what additional information would be needed for a stronger conclusion.
Q8. Is this skill still useful when automated systems summarize information?
Yes. A fluent summary can hide missing context or incorrect references, so people still need to check important claims against dependable underlying evidence.
That is a valid concern. However, I would distinguish X from Y.
One reason is … For example …
My view would change if …
Could you please repeat the question?
