adopt・adapt・adjustの違い｜採用・適応・調整の無料40問と全解説

adopt a methodは「採用」、adapt a methodは「改良・適応」

The school adopted a new teaching method.は新しい方法を導入したことです。The school adapted its teaching method for younger learners.は現在ある方法を学習者に合わせて変えたことです。どちらも教育の改善に関する英文ですが、元の方法を選び始めたのか、既存の方法を作り変えたのかが異なります。

adapt toとadjust toは意味が重なる

adapt to a new environmentもadjust to a new environmentも、環境への慣れ・対応を表す自然な英語です。一方adapt the material for beginnersとadjust the font sizeでは、前者は教材の内容を利用者に合わせて改作し、後者は画面上の文字サイズを少し調整します。個々の語を機械的に暗記するだけでなく、変える対象と変更の程度に注目しましょう。

adapt A for Bとadapt fromの違い

adapt the story for childrenは、物語を子ども向けに作り変えることです。adapted from a novelは、ある小説を原作・素材として脚色した意味に使われます。adaptは「適応する」だけの動詞ではなく、映画化・教材化・再編集に関する英文でも出てきます。

adjustは音量・時刻・数字などを調整

adjust the volume、adjust the height、adjust the scheduleなどが代表例です。Cambridge Dictionaryでは、より正確・適切にするために少し変える意味が中心と説明されています。数値を調整したという英文からは、変更前の数値が必ず誤りだったと断定することはできません。

英検長文では「採用済み」と「導入準備中」を分ける

The school plans to adopt a new textbook next year.は採用の予定であり、今年すでに採用しているという意味ではありません。The teachers are adapting the worksheets.なら、現在教材を調整・改作している途中です。The school adopted the system last year.なら過去の採用を述べます。動詞の意味に加えて時制を読めば、制度変更を誤って要約することを防げます。
