across・through・overの違い｜横切る・通り抜ける・越える無料40問【全解説】

道路を渡るacross、トンネルを抜けるthrough

We walked across the road.では、道路の片側から反対側へ移動します。We walked through the tunnel.では、トンネルの内部に入り出口へ抜けます。特に森や背の高い草などでは、木々・草に囲まれながら進むことを強調するとthroughが自然です。一方、同じ森でも単に一方から他方へ全体を横断する点を強調すればacrossも用いられます。何を描写したいかで判断してください。

overは高さ・障害物を意識する

The ball went over the wall.ではボールが壁の上を越えます。Through the wall.なら壁の内部を通過する意味になり、穴などの特殊な状況を想定します。on the wallやabove the wallとの使い分けもありますが、本記事はまず「上端を越えて反対側へ」という動きを扱います。

across fromとacrossの違い

The post office is across from the library.は「郵便局は図書館の向かい側」です。アメリカ英語でacross fromは自然な位置表現としてよく用いられます。Walk across the road.は動きの横断を表し、前置詞の後ろに来る名詞との意味の関係が異なります。

over the last three weeksは移動ではなく期間

We have worked hard over the last three weeks.は「過去3週間にわたって」です。Cambridge Dictionaryでは、数字で指定された期間を述べる場合はoverを使うと案内されています。ただし「Monday through Friday」のようにアメリカ英語でthroughが期間の始まりと終わりを表す用法もあり、すべての時間表現でthroughが誤りという意味ではありません。

acrossとoverが重なる場面もある

英語は常に1つの前置詞しか使えないわけではありません。たとえばWe walked over to the shop.とWe walked across to the shop.は文脈によって意味が近くなります。学校の練習では、障害物の上を越えるのか、内部を抜けるのか、境界を横断するのかという状況を先に定めてから採点することが大切です。

よくある質問

acrossとthroughの違いは「表面」と「内部」だけですか？

最初の判断には有効ですが、acrossは場所の一方から反対側への横断、throughは囲まれた中を通る感覚を強調します。状況によって意味が重なることもあります。

overとacrossは両方使える場合がありますか？

あります。overは上方や障害物を越える点を重視し、acrossは横断を重視する場合が多いです。同じ移動を異なる視点から述べることもできます。

across fromはアメリカ英語ですか？

特にアメリカ英語でよく用いられる、向かい側を示す自然な位置表現です。

through the last few daysはいつでも誤りですか？

数字で具体的に示した期間を述べるときはover the last few daysやover the last three weeksが標準的です。一方Monday through Fridayなどの地域的な用法もあり、一律にthroughの時間表現が間違いになるわけではありません。
