The North River Library started a project in which students designed a better reading space. At first, the group planned to buy twenty new chairs, but its budget was too small. Instead, members interviewed visitors to learn what they actually needed. Many wanted quiet tables and brighter lamps rather than additional chairs. The students compared three different plans and estimated the cost of each one. They chose the plan with eight lamps and four tables because it improved the room without using all the available money. However, the group did not claim that this plan would please every visitor. It asked the library to try the new arrangement for one month and collect feedback before buying more equipment. This approach allowed the students to test their idea rather than make a permanent decision based only on their first opinions.
- What did the students originally plan to buy?
- Why did they interview visitors?
- What did many visitors prefer?
- Which plan was selected?
- Why did they not spend all the money?
- What would the group do before a permanent decision?
Dear Student Volunteers, Thank you for joining our weekend science event. We have received applications from thirty-six students, but only twenty-four positions are available for the morning session. Students who signed up before Monday will receive the morning positions. Other applicants will be offered an afternoon session if they confirm by Wednesday at noon. All volunteers must attend a short online orientation on Friday. You should bring a notebook, while the organizers will provide safety gloves and other materials. If heavy rain is expected, the outdoor experiment will move to the community hall. The event itself will not be canceled unless the organizers send an official email on Friday evening. Please note that the morning session starts at nine, but volunteers should arrive at eight thirty to prepare their materials. We appreciate your help and look forward to working with you.
- How many students applied?
- How many morning positions are available?
- What deadline is given to later applicants?
- What must all volunteers do on Friday?
- Who will supply safety gloves?
- What would happen if heavy rain were expected?
A group of students compared two methods of learning English vocabulary. In the first group, students reviewed ten new words for five minutes on four different days. In the second group, students studied the same ten words for twenty minutes on a single day. One week later, the teacher gave both groups a short test. On average, the first group remembered more words. Some students immediately decided that short reviews were always better. The teacher, however, pointed out that the groups were small and that their members had different levels of English before the project. She suggested repeating the activity with more students and giving everyone a test before the lessons began. The group also planned to see whether students could use the words in original sentences, rather than only choose their meanings from a list. The project showed that one promising result does not prove a method works best for every learner.
- How much total study time did each group spend on the ten words?
- Which group performed better on average?
- Why was the teacher cautious about the conclusion?
- What did the teacher recommend before the next study?
- What additional ability would the group check?
- What conclusion does the passage support?
Students at a cultural center were preparing an online exchange with teenagers in another country. Their first plan was to give long presentations about traditional foods. However, their partners said they would rather ask questions and discuss everyday life. The students therefore changed each presentation to a one-minute introduction and prepared two questions about local customs. They also agreed to check facts before explaining them. For example, they did not want to claim that every family ate the same food for breakfast. Instead, they planned to describe several examples and explain that habits vary among households. During the practice session, a student used the word ‘always’ to describe a holiday tradition. Her teacher asked her to change the sentence because she did not have evidence about all families. The final exchange would take place on Friday, while the practice questions needed to be sent to the teacher by Tuesday.
- What did the partners prefer to long presentations?
- How long would each introduction be?
- How many questions would students prepare?
- Why did the teacher object to ‘always’?
- What would students explain about breakfast?
- When were practice questions due?

- Thirty-six. —
- Twenty-four. —
- Wednesday at noon. —
- Attend a short online orientation. —
- The organizers. —
- The outdoor experiment would move to the community hall. —
- Twenty minutes. — 5
- The first group. —
- The groups were small and had different starting levels. —
- Give everyone a test before the lessons begin. —
- Whether students could use words in original sentences. —
- One result is promising but does not prove a method is best for everyone. —

- One minute. —
- Two. — two questionsについて。
- The student lacked evidence about all families. —
- Different households may have different habits. —
