The news is good. は正しく、The news are good.は通常誤りです。しかしThe police are here.ではareを使います。 名詞が-sで終わるかどうかと、主語が単数扱いか複数扱いかは必ずしも一致しません。中学高校英文法で間違えやすい学問名・集合的な名詞・対になる道具・単位表現を独自30問で整理します。
対象：中学1〜3年生と高校生、英検の短文・英作文、NEW TREASUREの定期テスト。問題・和訳は慶英会が独自に制作した教材です。
3つの重要な分類
-sでも単数扱い：news、mathematics、physics、economics（学問）、statistics（統計学）、linguisticsなど。複数扱い：police、cattle、people、children、scissors、trousers、clothesなど。数の中心を別の語で表す：a pair of scissors is、two pairs of scissors are。見た目の-sだけで決めず、名詞の意味・中心語を判定します。
statisticsには2つの意味がある
Statistics is useful.は統計学を1つの学問として扱った文です。The statistics are accurate.は複数の統計数値を指す文です。同じ綴りでも意味によって数の扱いが変わることを理解します。
独自30問｜主語と動詞の一致を選ぶ
A. -sがあっても単数扱い（問1〜10）

応用の書き換え
①The scissors are sharp. → A pair of scissors is sharp.（はさみ1丁はよく切れる）。②The news is surprising. → Two pieces of news are surprising.（2件のニュースは驚くべき内容だ）。③Statistics is important.（統計学は重要だ）／The statistics are accurate.（統計数値は正確だ）。主語の中心語と動詞を同時に切り替えます。
5日間の復習
1日目は問1〜10、2日目は問11〜20、3日目は問21〜30、4日目に追加書き換えを解き、5日目は30問を混ぜて復習します。名詞の末尾だけでなく、その名詞が意味する対象を日本語で確認してください。
FAQ
Q. newsは複数形ではないの？
newsは-sで終わりますが、『ニュース・知らせ』を意味する通常の用法では不可算で単数扱いです。
Q. policeにはisを使えますか？
警察という人々の組織を指すthe policeでは通常areを使います。警察官1人ならa police officer isとします。
Q. statisticsはいつでもisですか？
いいえ。学問名では単数扱いですが、複数の統計値を意味する場合はareを使います。
