prior to・following・subsequently・thereafter・meanwhileの早見表
prior to＋名詞・動名詞＝事前。Prior to submitting, check your sources.／following＋名詞＝その後。Following the meeting, we updated the notice.／subsequently＝後に。The page was subsequently updated.／thereafter＝それ以後。The room was used thereafter.／meanwhile＝その間。Meanwhile, the other group checked the data.
文法注意：prior to submitではなくprior to submittingとし、following to the meetingではなくfollowing the meetingです。subsequentlyは副詞なのでsubsequently to updatedとはしません。
因果関係：Following the inspection, the machine failed.は点検後に故障したという時間順を示すだけで、点検が故障の原因だと断定しません。meanwhileは同時進行であり、単純な「その後」ではありません。

初見A｜実験の時間順と原因を区別：At a fictional school, students inspected a water-testing device on Monday. Prior to the inspection, the device had produced inconsistent readings. Following the inspection, the class replaced a loose cable on Tuesday and repeated the test on Wednesday. The readings then became more consistent. However, the teacher said that the sequence alone did not prove the cable had caused every earlier error. Meanwhile, another group investigated changes in room temperature. The class subsequently planned a controlled experiment to test the possible explanations. Thereafter, its written procedure would require both cable and temperature checks before each test.

初見B｜案内の公開日と規則の適用日：A fictional education program published an application notice on April 1. Applicants were asked to read the rules prior to submitting their forms. Following questions about the fee, the office revised the notice on April 5. It sent an updated message to applicants on April 6 and subsequently added a longer explanation to its website on April 8. Meanwhile, a separate team was preparing a list of available classrooms. The final notice stated that the new fee applied from April 5 onward, while forms submitted earlier would be processed under the original rules. Readers therefore needed to distinguish the publication date from the date when a rule took effect.

復習と定期テストへの応用
初日はprior to・following、翌日はsubsequently・thereafter・meanwhileを中心に問題1〜24を解きます。3日目は誤文訂正、4日目は和文英訳を再現し、5〜6日目には初見長文で日付と作業を順に並べます。7日目は「点検後に故障した」という時間順と「点検が故障を引き起こした」という因果主張を区別して英作文しましょう。
よくある質問
Q. prior toとbeforeは同じですか？ 意味は近いですが、prior toは改まった文章で使われ、後ろには名詞・動名詞が続きます。
Q. subsequentlyとthereafterの違いは？ subsequentlyは後の出来事、thereafterは基準時点以降の期間を示しやすい語です。文脈によって重なる場合もあります。
Q. followingは原因も表しますか？ 基本的には時間的に後という関係です。本文に追加の根拠がない限り因果を断定しません。
Q. meanwhileは後の出来事ですか？ 一般的には同時進行を示すため、「一方で」「その間」に相当します。
