結論｜予測・観測・原因の仮説を別々に読む

Weather reports may predict rain, while local measurements show dry conditions. という文では、予測と実際が異なります。average（平均）も、すべての日の値が同じことは意味しません。測定地点、期間、条件、推測の強さに印を付けて読みます。

最初に確認する3つの読み方

1. forecast / predict は事前の予測、measure / record / observe は観測・記録された値を示します。
2. on average は全ケースが同じという意味ではありません。higher than expected は「予想より高い」で、最高記録とは限りません。
3. may have caused・might explain は原因についての仮説。proved・confirmedなどの確定表現と区別します。

独自英文1｜学校の温室と土の湿り気

A school greenhouse team expected the soil to become dry after three sunny days. However, sensors showed that one section stayed wetter than the others. Students checked the watering records and found that the automatic system had watered that section twice. They reduced the watering time for a week, and the soil moisture then became closer to the target range. The team has not yet measured whether the change improves plant growth. Teachers advised students not to describe better growth as a proven result.

Both stations were checked on Friday and were working normally. A local newspaper described the whole coast as equally wet, which the measured data did not support. Meteorologists explained that a narrow rain cloud had passed over the north. They said that similar differences could occur again, although they could not predict exactly where.

独自英文3｜果樹園の霜と収穫予測

Farmers in Hill Valley predicted an early fruit harvest after a warm spring. A cold night in late April, however, damaged flowers in some lower fields. The upper fields suffered less damage, and their fruit continued growing. In May, farmers revised the expected harvest date for the lower fields but kept the original date for the upper ones. A farm report said total production might be smaller, yet the final amount could not be calculated until harvesting ended. The report did not claim that every tree had been damaged.

Officials warned that the results covered only one summer month and could not prove which design would work best throughout the year. Another set of readings will be collected in winter before a final decision.
