英作文では「AではなくBを行う」と「Aと違ってBは静かだ」は別の情報です。rather than / instead of は代替する選択や行動、unlike は比較対象との違いを説明するのに使います。何が実際に置き換えられたのか、単に提案されているのかを区別すると、具体的で正確な意見を書けます。
想定読者：英検3級〜1級の意見英作文で失点を減らしたい中高生。本番の級固有の問題を再現せず、問いとの対応・論理・語法を整えるための独自演習です。

まず押さえる4つの原則
- rather than A, B / B rather than A は選択・優先を示せる。構文の並列を整える。
- instead of＋名詞・動名詞：ある行動を別の行動に置き換える。instead of to do は避ける。
- unlike＋比較対象：性質・状況が異なること。置換した事実まで自動的には意味しない。
- 提案と実際の変更を分け、比べる対象の同じ属性を説明する。
代表的な誤答を修正する
誤答：
Unlike printed books, the student used an online book instead of to read paper.
改善：
Unlike the printed version, the online text can be accessed at home; the student may choose it instead of borrowing a printed copy.
和訳：印刷版と違い電子版は自宅から利用でき、生徒は紙の本を借りる代わりに電子版を選べる可能性がある。 解説：unlikeは性質の比較、instead ofは行動の代替。後者には動名詞や名詞を使います。

- 7日後：自分の学校生活について今回の表現を使い3〜4文の説明を書き、内容と理由を検証する。

よくある質問
rather thanとinstead ofは交換できますか。
重なる文脈もありますが、rather thanは優先・選択、instead ofは代替の動作を表す場面が多く、後続構造にも注意します。
unlikeを使うとAは廃止されたという意味ですか。
いいえ。性質の相違を示すだけで、置換や廃止までは意味しません。
