結論｜5種類の条件は何が違うか
unless：「〜でない限り」。The event will take place unless it rains heavily.（大雨にならなければ開催する）。provided that：「〜という条件で」。You may borrow the camera provided that you return it today.（今日返すことを条件に借りられる）。as long as：「〜という条件なら／〜する限り」。You can join as long as you register first.（事前登録すれば参加できる）。
only if：「〜の場合に限って」。ある行動に必要な条件を表す。Visitors may enter only if they have permission.（許可がある場合に限り入れる）。permissionがあっても人数制限など別の条件が残る可能性はある。in case：「〜という事態に備えて」。Take an umbrella in case it rains.（雨に備えて傘を持っていこう）。雨が実際に降ったと断定しない。in case of＋名詞（in case of an emergency）の形も使う。
学習上の注意として、unless Aは多くの文脈でif not Aと言い換え可能ですが、否定が二重になる場合や例外規則では慎重に読む必要があります。またonly ifは必要条件であり、条件を満たせば必ず結果が実現するという保証までは表しません。

復習｜条件を「必須」「十分」「備え」に分ける
①「必ず必要な条件」はonly if、②「満たす限り実施できる」はprovided that・as long as、③「例外として行わない条件」はunless、④「起こるかもしれない事態への準備」はin caseを目印に読みます。only ifとifは論理上の向きが違うことにも注意します。「許可書を提出した」だけで正式な参加が確定したと考えず、別の条件も読み取る必要があります。
英文を要約するときは「誰が、何を、どんな条件で、もし条件を満たさなければ何が起きるか」をそれぞれ一行で整理してください。試験の内容一致では本文にない「必ず全員が利用できる」「確実に開催される」といった強い選択肢を避けます。
FAQ｜unlessとif notは同じですか？
多くの肯定的な条件文では近い意味に言い換えられます。ただし否定の位置や文脈によって注意が必要です。例：We will go unless it rains.＝We will go if it does not rain.。
FAQ｜provided thatとas long asの違いは？
どちらも条件を表します。provided thatは条件を明示するやや形式的な文体で、as long asは条件が続く間というニュアンスを持つ場合もあります。
FAQ｜in caseとifは同じですか？
いいえ。Take an umbrella in case it rainsは雨が降る前に備えて傘を持つことです。Take an umbrella if it rainsは雨が降ったら傘を持つ条件と解釈できます。
