結論｜指示語は直前の単語だけでなく意味の整合性で確定
it：直前までに説明された単数の物・行動・状況を受ける。they / them：人物や物などの複数対象を受ける。this：直前の数値や一文全体で述べた事柄を受ける場合がある。these / those：前に挙げた複数の対象や、条件に当てはまる一部の集団を指す。指示語の単数・複数、行動主体、意味を確認して絞り込みます。
例えば、Some families had no internet. They used paper forms. のTheyはネットを使えなかった家庭です。近くにあるlibraryやformsのような語では、動詞usedの意味と文の主語に合いません。またthisは「その言葉」ではなく前の文章で説明した出来事全体を受ける場合があります。
