結論｜sometimesは時々、sometimeはいつか、some timeは時間の長さ
sometimesは「時々」という頻度、sometimeは「いつか」という不特定の時点、some timeは「ある程度の時間」です。I sometimes study after school.なら時々勉強する、Let’s meet sometime next week.なら来週のいつか会う、I need some time to study.なら勉強するための時間が必要という意味です。
またsome timesも、some＋複数名詞timesで「いくつかの時刻・機会」という意味なら成立します。ただしsometimesと同じ頻度副詞ではありません。慶英会独自の4択24問＋誤文訂正16問＝40問で、単語の分かち書きと文の意味を学びます。英検公式過去問ではありません。
4つの表記と意味を整理
- sometimes：I sometimes walk to school.（時々徒歩で通学する）
- sometime：We’ll meet sometime next month.（来月のある日、時刻未定）
- some time：It took some time to finish.（完了までしばらく時間がかかった）
- some times：There are some times when I study late.（遅くまで勉強する場合がいくつかある）
- 重要：some timeとsometimeは文中で「時間の幅」と「時点」が違う。文脈によって少し意味が重なる例はあるため、使い分ける目的を明示して書く。
sometimesの位置｜一般動詞の前・be動詞の後
She sometimes visits the library.（時々訪れる）のように一般動詞の前、She is sometimes late.（時々遅刻する）のようにbe動詞の後に置くのが基本です。文頭のSometimes, she visits the library.も自然です。
sometimeは日時を特定していない
The event will happen sometime next week.なら来週のどこか一時点で開催予定ですが、日付はまだ特定していません。The event sometimes happens next week.では「時々」という反復の意味になり、意図した一回の日程と合いません。
some timeは時間の幅を持つ
We spent some time preparing.は準備に時間を費やした意味です。We have some time before the meeting.なら会議前に使える時間があります。some timeは一般に「ある程度の時間」というまとまりを表し、いつ行うかを決める意味のsometimeと異なります。
some timesの意味｜複数の時刻を名詞で数える
The schedule shows some times for the interviews.ではtimesは「面接の複数の時刻」という可算名詞です。There are some times when the room is busy.も複数の機会を表します。「sometimesを2語にすれば同じ意味」ではありません。
