英検準1級のundergo・encounter・experience・face・confrontの違い｜独自40問【全訳】

英検準1級のundergo・encounter・experience・face・confrontは「経験する」「直面する」と訳されますが、文の意味と主語・目的語が異なります。undergoは研修・変化などの過程を経る、encounterは予期しない問題に遭遇する、experienceは出来事・変化を実際に経験する、faceは課題に直面する、confrontは問題や相手に正面から向き合う語です。慶英会オリジナルの40問を4技能に活用しましょう。

最初に理解：5つの動詞と目的語

• undergo training / repairs / an examination：研修・修理・検査という過程を受ける。過去形underwent、過去分詞undergone。
• encounter unexpected problems / unfamiliar words：予期しない問題や未知語と出会う。
• experience delays / changes / improvement：出来事や変化を経験する。
• face a shortage / challenge / criticism：困難・批判に直面する。
• confront a problem / confront someone about an issue：問題に正面から向き合う、相手へ問題を問いただす。

faceとconfrontは重なる場合がありますが、confront somebody about an issueは当事者に直接問いただす動作を含みます。encounter difficultiesとexperience difficultiesも近い表現なので、意味の中心と文の構造を合わせて判断してください。

A fictional hospital introduced an online appointment system to reduce waiting time. Staff underwent training before the service opened, but they encountered unexpected login errors during the first week. Several patients experienced delays and could not confirm their bookings. The manager faced criticism because some users believed the hospital had promised that every appointment would be processed immediately. She reviewed the original notice and found that it had only described a possible improvement in waiting time. Rather than ignoring the complaints, she confronted the software provider about the repeated technical failures. The hospital then revised the instructions, offered telephone bookings and planned additional testing. After the changes, fewer patients reported problems, but the hospital did not conclude that every access difficulty had been resolved. Some older patients still needed assistance, so the service remained under review.

A fictional secondary school prepared a community science exhibition. Students underwent a short safety course before handling demonstration equipment. During setup, they encountered a shortage of protective materials and experienced unexpected changes to the room schedule. The teacher in charge faced a difficult decision about whether to delay opening. One volunteer suggested sharing equipment between groups, while another warned that the safety checks must not be skipped. The teacher confronted the organizers about an inaccurate claim in the event leaflet, which said that every display had passed inspection. In fact, several displays were still awaiting checks. The school corrected the leaflet and opened only the sections that had been approved. Visitors later reported that the smaller exhibition was useful, but the organizers recognized that overcoming one scheduling problem did not mean the overall safety review was complete.
