Part 2
- 結論・提案:therefore / instead / the lesson is / the aim is / researchers recommend の後を優先して聞く。
At first, our neighborhood garden seemed like a simple way to provide fresh vegetables to residents. Volunteers prepared several small plots, and local stores donated seeds. In the first month, many families came to help. By the middle of summer, however, participation had dropped. Because only two people were watering the plants regularly, some crops failed during a dry spell. The garden committee considered buying an automatic watering system, but the equipment would have been expensive to maintain. Instead, it introduced a rotating schedule so that volunteers could share responsibility. The harvest was modest, yet participation became steadier. The lesson is not that community gardens are ineffective. Rather, a project that attracts enthusiastic visitors at the beginning also needs a realistic plan for the less exciting daily work that follows.
問1. What is the speaker’s main message?
- A. Community gardens should be abandoned after a poor harvest.
- B. Initial enthusiasm must be supported by a practical maintenance plan.
- C. Automatic watering equipment is always affordable.
- D. Shops should supply all vegetables for free.
問2. What did the committee actually introduce?
- A. An expensive automatic system.
- B. A new fee for residents.
- C. A shared schedule for volunteers.
- D. A competition among stores.
A college recently asked students to evaluate digital textbooks. Many respondents said they could find information more quickly by using the search function. Others appreciated being able to carry fewer printed books. Yet the same survey revealed complaints about distractions from notifications and the cost of suitable devices. Importantly, the questionnaire measured students’ opinions, not their examination performance. We therefore cannot conclude that switching to digital materials automatically improves learning. Some instructors have suggested combining electronic resources with printed pages for close reading and note-taking. The college has not selected a single format for all classes. Instead, it will run smaller trials in different subjects and examine both practical access and the quality of students’ work. Convenience matters, but it is only one part of educational value.
問3. What does the speaker emphasize?
- A. Student preferences alone cannot establish better learning outcomes.
- B. The college has decided to ban printed textbooks.
- C. Notifications never disturb students.
- D. A digital-only policy has improved examination results.
問4. What will the college do next?
- A. Require one format for every subject.
- B. Cancel all educational trials.
- C. Give every student a free computer immediately.
- D. Test different approaches across subjects and assess their effects.
A research team installed inexpensive sensors along a river to record water quality every hour. The large amount of data appeared promising. After several storms, however, some devices began reporting values that were unusually high. Laboratory tests showed that mud had affected their measurements. The team cleaned the equipment and compared its results with samples tested independently. Although hourly readings may reveal changes that occasional samples miss, a greater number of measurements does not guarantee better information if the instruments are inaccurate. The researchers now recommend regular calibration and occasional laboratory checks alongside automated monitoring. Their goal is not to replace field scientists with machines. It is to use continuous observations and reliable manual testing together, so that unexpected readings can be investigated before local authorities act on them.
問5. What limitation of the sensors does the speaker identify?
- A. They cannot collect measurements hourly.
- B. Their readings can be distorted by environmental conditions.
- C. They are always more accurate than laboratory tests.
- D. They measure only the river’s depth.
問6. What does the team recommend?
- A. Stopping all automatic monitoring.
- B. Trusting each reading without checking it.
- C. Combining sensor data with calibration and laboratory testing.
- D. Replacing every scientist with machines.
Museums often add mobile audio guides to help visitors learn about exhibitions. These tools can provide several languages without filling the walls with long descriptions. But an audio guide alone does not serve everyone. Visitors who cannot hear the recording may need captions or transcripts, while others prefer printed summaries they can read at their own pace. One museum tested a new guide and initially measured success by counting downloads. The staff later realized that a download did not show whether the visitor understood the information or found it accessible. The museum is now asking visitors with different needs to test several versions of its guide. It plans to offer a combination of audio, text, and visual explanations. The aim is not to make every visitor use a smartphone, but to give people meaningful choices about how to explore an exhibition.
問7. Why was download count considered insufficient?
- A. It did not show accessibility or understanding.
- B. The guide could not be downloaded.
- C. Printed information was prohibited.
- D. Visitors were required to buy a phone.
問8. What is the museum’s intended approach?
- A. Offer audio only.
- B. Force all guests to use smartphones.
- C. Remove explanations from exhibitions.
- D. Provide several formats suited to different visitors.
A city offered small rebates to households that purchased energy-saving equipment. At first, officials were surprised that applications from renters were much less common than applications from homeowners. Interviews suggested that renters often had little authority to replace appliances or improve insulation. Even when the potential savings were attractive, a tenant might have to obtain the owner’s permission before making changes. The city therefore revised its information campaign to include guidance for landlords and tenants. Officials are also considering a scheme that would support improvements in rental buildings directly. However, they have not yet collected enough evidence to know whether these measures will reduce energy bills across the city. The speaker argues that financial incentives are more effective when policymakers consider who has the power to act on them, rather than assuming every household can make the same choices.
問9. Why did renters apply less frequently?
- A. They used no electricity at home.
- B. They often lacked authority to make property changes.
- C. They were prohibited from reading information.
- D. The city had abolished all rebates.
問10. What broader point is the speaker making?
- A. Rebates are guaranteed to lower every household’s bill.
- B. The city has measured a large fall in total energy use.
- C. Policy design should account for different people’s ability to act.
- D. Only renters should receive information.
A conservation group installed cameras near a new wildlife crossing above a busy road. The cameras recorded several animals using the crossing during the first few months. Local residents welcomed the images, and some newspapers described the project as a major success. The researchers, however, were more cautious. The photographs showed that animals could use the structure, but they did not demonstrate that the region’s wildlife population was increasing. Nor could the team yet determine how many animals had stopped trying to cross the road at dangerous locations. To answer those questions, the group plans to compare records from nearby areas and follow patterns over several years. For now, the speaker considers the images encouraging evidence of use, rather than final proof that the crossing has solved every threat to wildlife.
問11. What do the camera images establish?
- A. The population has doubled.
- B. No animal uses the old road.
- C. Every danger to wildlife has been removed.
- D. Some animals have used the new crossing.
問12. Why does the group plan to collect further evidence?
- A. To estimate broader population and road-crossing effects over time.
- B. To prevent newspapers from taking photographs.
- C. To stop nearby researchers from gathering data.
- D. To make the crossing inaccessible to animals.

B。 The lesson is not … Rather …
C。 Instead, it introduced a rotating schedule
A。 opinions, not examination performance
smaller trials in different subjects と practical access / quality。
recommend regular calibration and occasional laboratory checks。
A。 download did not show whether … understood … accessible。
combination of audio, text, visual / meaningful choices。
B。 little authority to replace appliances or improve insulation。
C。 who has the power to act on them が結論。
D。 photographs showed that animals could use the structure。
A。 nearby areas / over several years は影響の検証目的。
