日本英語検定協会の5級Can-doリストには、身近な内容の短い会話を理解し、簡単に伝えることが学習目標として示されています。ただし、公式試験内容の一次試験はReading・Listeningであり、本記事の聞き返し40問という独立大問は存在しません。Could you …?など5級の基礎を超える場合がある表現も、学校や日常の会話へつなぐ発展語句として扱います。

聞き取れないのか、意味を知らないのかで質問は違う
声が小さい・速すぎる場合はPlease speak more slowly.やCould you say that again?を使います。単語の発音は聞こえたけれど意味が分からないならWhat does … mean?が適切です。同じ『分からない』でも原因が音か意味かつづりかを区別しましょう。
How do you spell…?は文字の並びを聞く
How do you spell Ken?と聞かれたらK-E-Nのように一文字ずつ答えます。What does Ken mean?とは別の質問です。bとdなどが聞き取りにくい場合はIs that B or D?のように確認できます。
Did you say …?で数字・場所を確認する
Did you say page fifteen?やDid you say May third?なら、聞こえた語が合っているか確認できます。現在の習慣を尋ねるDo you…?とは異なり、直前に話された内容を確認するための表現です。英検5級より発展的な文型もありますが、実際の学校生活では有用です。

相手が繰り返してくれたら、何度も意味なく聞き返すのではなく、確認できた一部分（page fifteen、Room 2など）を使って自分の理解を確かめるのも一つの方法です。
慶英会独自40問：適切な聞き返し・確認・返答を選ぶ
A〜Dから、その状況で最も適切な英文を一つ選びます。問1〜8は聞き取れないとき、9〜16は単語の意味、17〜24はスペリング、25〜32は数字・場所、33〜40は相手からの返答です。

出題を保証できません。学校・日常会話でも使える聞き返しの一例として紹介しています。
Please say it again.とWhat does it mean?は同じですか？
違います。前者は再度発話してもらい、後者は意味を説明してもらうための質問です。
Could you…?は5級には難しすぎますか？
発展的な表現として後から覚える方法もあります。最初はPardon?、Again, please.、I don’t understand.など簡単な語から始めても構いません。
聞き返しを覚えればListeningで合格できますか？
