Subject: Final Details for the Community Science Fair

Dear Student Presenters,

Thank you for registering for Saturday’s science fair at the Harbor Community Center. The exhibition will open to visitors at 10:00 a.m. Presenters should arrive through the west entrance between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. so that staff can check their names and direct them to the correct tables.

The large conference room will be used for a music rehearsal that morning. As a result, all science presentations will take place in the gymnasium instead. The center will provide tables and chairs, but presenters must bring their own printed posters and any computers they need. Please do not bring equipment that produces smoke or strong odors.

Groups requiring an electrical outlet should email our office by Thursday at noon. We may not be able to arrange electricity for requests received after that deadline. During the fair, a volunteer will be available to help visitors find exhibits, but volunteers cannot operate or repair students’ equipment.

The fair will close at 3:00 p.m. Judges will consider how clearly participants explain their research question, method, and results. They will not simply reward projects that use the most expensive equipment. A short award ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Best regards,
Emma Wilson

During a period of unusually hot weather, the city of Linden opened several public buildings as places where residents could spend time in cooler indoor conditions. These spaces included a library, two community centers, and a small sports hall. City staff hoped that people without adequate cooling at home would find them useful.

After the first month, staff counted visitors and asked some of them about their experience. The library received many visitors, but the sports hall had very few. At first, officials thought that people simply preferred libraries. However, they later learned that the sports hall was difficult to reach by public transportation, and information about its opening hours had not been widely shared.

To improve access, the city began posting clear maps at bus stops and publishing opening hours in several languages. It also adjusted the hall’s timetable to include part of the evening. Visitor numbers increased during the following weeks. Nevertheless, officials were careful about claiming success: temperatures had become higher during the same period, which might also have encouraged more people to visit the buildings.

The city will continue collecting information throughout the summer. It plans to compare the number of visitors, the cost of running each space, and how easily older residents and people with disabilities can reach them. Officials explain that simply opening a room is not enough. A useful public service must be easy to find, accessible, and reliable. The city will decide next year which locations should remain available during future periods of extreme heat.

問27 What was the main purpose of opening public buildings during the heat?

  1. To provide cooler spaces for residents.
  2. To replace all private homes.
  3. To close the city library permanently.
  4. To teach residents new sports.

A(To provide cooler spaces for residents.)。places where residents could spend time in cooler indoor conditions

問28 Why might the sports hall have had fewer visitors than the library?

  1. All sports equipment was broken.
  2. It was difficult to reach and its hours were not well advertised.
  3. Residents were forbidden to enter it.
  4. Only children could use the hall.

B(It was difficult to reach and its hours were not well advertised.)。difficult to reach by public transportation と opening hours had not been widely shared。

問29 Why were officials cautious about the later increase in visitor numbers?

  1. The spaces were charging expensive fees.
  2. They had stopped collecting visitor numbers.
  3. Hotter weather might also have influenced attendance.
  4. Every building had been closed at night.

C(Hotter weather might also have influenced attendance.)。temperatures had become higher during the same period

30 What will the city compare during the summer?

  1. The prices of new houses.
  2. Only the number of library books.
  3. The number of sports competitions.
  4. Attendance, operating costs, and accessibility.

D(Attendance, operating costs, and accessibility.)。number of visitors、cost of running、how easily … reach them を比較する。

問31 Which idea best summarizes the writer’s main point?

  1. Providing a service requires attention to how people can actually use it.
  2. The building with the most visitors is always the cheapest.
  3. Public information should be given in only one language.
  4. More visitors prove that every policy is successful.

A(Providing a service requires attention to how people can actually use it.)。

Writing Part 1|

Many towns have started offering short after-school activities at public libraries. Students can join reading groups, practice using computers, or get help with basic research. These programs give children learning opportunities outside regular classes, and families may find them especially useful when private activities are expensive.

However, libraries must consider the number of staff and the space available. Some programs become crowded, while others have few participants because parents are not familiar with the schedule. Staff also need to protect children’s personal information and manage safe arrival and departure procedures.

To address these problems, several libraries have introduced advance registration and clear information for families. Some share rooms with nearby community centers and ask trained volunteers to help. These measures may make programs easier to manage, but they still require money and regular evaluation.

Some public libraries offer after-school activities that give children affordable learning opportunities beyond regular classes. However, limited staff, crowded rooms, unclear schedules, and safety concerns can make programs difficult to operate. Libraries use advance registration, better information, shared spaces, and trained volunteers to address these issues, although funding and evaluation remain necessary.

Writing Part 2|

TOPIC: Do you think more schools should offer lessons about managing money?

POINTS: Future life / Education / School schedules

I think more schools should offer lessons about managing money. First, students will need to make financial decisions when they become adults. Learning how to plan a simple budget could help them avoid unnecessary spending. Second, money lessons can make subjects such as mathematics more useful. For example, students could compare the costs of two transportation plans and explain which one fits a limited budget. Some schools may have little time for extra lessons. However, teachers could include short activities in existing classes. This would develop practical skills without creating a completely new subject.
